Emerged From Drawing

“Do you think you can beat Femi's family?” Hassan's mum asked, as she was so sure that no one in her family had the power to perform magic. The spirit of magic lies in the hands of the Femi family, and everyone has one magic or the other. In that family, no one has the same magical powers, but if one has, the other must not have it. This is how they all have their magic.

Hassan is someone who is just growing and in the family of those who have nothing to do with magic. His family has been on a low-key since they are in the lower level when compared to the Femi's family, who have all it takes to perform any kind of magic ever.

The community, Afor, has a culture, and in their culture, they always have magical competition. Hassan's family has never for once, partake in the competition in the history of the community.

Since the history of the community, no one had ever defeated the Femi's family, most especially their youngest, who was 18 years old. This is the reason they all moved into the community with pride. Sporadically, they used their magic to intimidate people in the community. The reason was because no one had ever challenged them in the history of the town.

“Mum! I'm going to partake in this competition,” Hassan, who was just six years old, said. The whole family was left in shock, but then they took his words as a joke since he was still a child.

“I guess you are joking,” his mum replied, while Hassan's elder brother, who also thought those words were joking words replied, “You better close that mouth, you little one!! Don't you know that no one had ever defeated the Femi's family?”

“I will defeat them no matter what,” Hassan said again.

They all laughed over it, but his words kept piercing through his mother's heart as he knew the kind of person Hassan is.

She called Hassan and sat him down.

“Hassan, my child. My little baby. My only and only last born. No one can know your mind except your mother. I know what you can do, even though you are young. Do you know that what you just said is bigger than your age?”

“Yes, mum, but never say never. I can do what I just said,” Hassan replied.

“But you don't have the spirit of magic. As you can see, magic is the name of the competition,” his mother, who cared so much about him, said.

“Mum, if not magic, then I can do something else to defeat him,” Hassan replied. This was when his mum concluded that Hassan was talking out of points just because he was a child. She left after confirming how stable he might be.

The only thing Hassan knew best was drawing. He can draw and make his drawing look unique. Although, in history, his great-grandfather was sent out of the community just because of the magical powers he has. He has the spirit of commanding things to speak even when they are dead. He commanded the spirit of the past decades who had died for over 100 years to life and spoke what they needed to do just to defeat the opponent during war. Likewise, he also invoked the spirit of other warriors to fight against their opponent, which led to their victory. Furthermore, he was sent out of the community after accusing him of what he did not do. This is the reason the Femi's family had to take over from where he stopped, but beyond that, their magic was no match for Hassan's great-grandfather.

The day came by, and everyone gathered in the community square. People from far and near came just to observe the wonders of magic, while some came by to try their best if they could win in the competition. Although the community has no king, they promised to install their king on this very day.

Hassan went to the magic competition just to observe with his other brothers and mother. The competition started as the first to come on board was a young-looking boy of the age of 15. He was from the nearby community but was defeated by the Femi's family. Another man came out and performed his magic, but was no match for the Femi's family. It was their youngest boy who came out. He has been the one defeating everyone.

Now, the old man who was conducting the competition asked, “Is there anyone who wants to come out before I can declare the winner?”

Hassan, who was seated and observing, answered, “Yes, I'm in.” His mum and other members of his family looked at Hassan. Hassan was so bold to speak up. They had thought he was joking, but then he came out at once.

The youngest of the family of the Femi's stepped out and boldly turned a rod into a snake. Although it was still the same kind of magic he has been performing even with the others that came up.

Hassan stepped forward, while his mum was afraid something bad might happen to his last son, Hassan.

Hassan took his drawing materials and laid the white paper on the wall beside the chief priest. He started drawing while the opponent was smiling, and everyone present shouted, “This is not a drawing competition, but magic. Don't pretend as if you have something to do. Just admit”.

The youngest of the Femi's family was just smiling.

When Hassan was done, he closed his eyes, and immediately the images he had drawn were coming out to reality. He drew three images, and those images were out challenging themselves in the arena. Everyone was surprised, and his family were left without words. His mum was so shocked.

“This is the first of its kind. I have never seen something so weird like this,” the chief priest said in surprise.

When he opened his eyes, the images went back to the drawing. Everyone started clapping, hailing Hassan. His mum could not believe her eyes.

“You have inherited this from your great-grandfather,” the chief priest confessed.

'My boy had said it before now that never say never”, his mum said.

Hassan was pronounced the winner, and not just that, but he was crowned the next king even though he was still young. The previous king did something similar before he was installed as the king. These were the words from the chief priest.
