Larry Is Alive 9 May 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for thursday, the 9th day of May, 2024. Real Madrid defeated Bayern Munich (2-1) on the night to book a place in the UCL finals with another German side Borussia Dortmund. Most pundits tipped Bayern Munich to triumph and thus set an all German final but that was not to be as they ultimately lost to the Spanish giant Real Madrid (4-3) on aggregate. Congratulations to them.

Larry begins his look at today in history from the world of voyage and discovery. He finds out that on this day in 1502, skilled navigator and admiral Christopher Columbus, often regarded as the "discoverer" of the New World, set sail from Cádiz, Spain, on his fourth and last trip, seeking to find a route to Asia.

From the world of voyage and discovery, Larry goes to the world of music and entertainment. He finds out that on this day in 2020, Little Richard, an American singer and pianist whose popular songs from the mid-1950s were seminal moments in the evolution of rock and roll, died at the age of 87 in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

From the world of music and entertainment, Larry goes to the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1960, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first birth control pill.

From the USA, Larry goes to the world of track and field. He finds out that on this day in Ralph Boston, an American track and field athlete, the first man to jump over 27 feet (8.23 metres), was born in Laurel, Mississippi.

From the world of track and field, Larry goes to Ethiopia. He finds out that on this day in 1936, Seven months after invading Ethiopia and forcing Emperor Haile Selassie I into exile, Italy seized it as part of Italian East Africa.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from England. He finds out that on this day in 1986, Tenzing Norgay, a Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer who in 1953 became, together with Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, the first person to set foot on the top of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, died in Darjeeling [now Darjiling], West Bengal, India.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
