Powerful Eggshells For Organic Garden

Gardening with an organic system is starting to change lives more, and more every day!

Learning and exploring a new world is certainly exciting. In the past, when I just graduated from college, I couldn't cook because I didn't have the opportunity to cook at home. But since I moved to the capital and had to be independent at that time, I started to like cooking.

Then at the beginning of this year, I started to like gardening and learned everything from the beginning. Youtube is my teacher. I am very grateful, I am blessed with the ability to learn quickly. When it comes to recipes, I can successfully see new recipes, so with gardening, I am very grateful to be able to successfully plant even though I am still a beginner gardener.

I continue to learn, never stop improvising many things in my garden. From the beginning, I chose to garden organically. So, I started learning how to use the materials around me to fertilize my planting media.

Starting from compost, manure, also, eggshells. Compost and eggshells are very useful for reducing waste from my kitchen, especially from the cooking process that I do every day.

Eggs are a source of protein that my family consumes almost every day. So, I was very excited to collect lots of egg shells. Before getting to know gardening, especially organic gardens, I always threw away the egg shells.

But now everything has changed. I collected a lot of egg shells from my kitchen, and even from my mother-in-law's kitchen.

Processing Egg Shells Into Powder

In fact, egg shells are a good source of protein for plant growth, especially in the vegetative phase. Egg shells help strengthen the leaves and stems, of course this is very useful, especially in the early stages of the plant so that the plant does not break easily.

Apart from that, the contents of egg shells also help protect against plant root rot because they are anti-microbial.

But unfortunately, egg shells will take a long time to be absorbed by the planting medium if they are not processed. So, usually I process egg shells into powder.

AA60AE0F-BFE3-4510-9008-4BF37003C5B9.jpeg

First, I wash them straight away then dry them. After the egg shells became dry, then I stored the dried egg shells. Waiting for inventory to become larger before further processing.

0B03D9D3-743B-4462-800E-F23CF1C8B894.jpeg

After I feel that the supply of dry eggshells is sufficient, usually one basket, then I will blend the eggshells into powder form.

290A4358-5EA8-4156-BC65-211294228D5F.jpeg

For maximum results, I filter the results of the eggshell blender to get fine eggshell powder. The finer the texture of the eggshell powder, the easier it will be for their nutrients to be absorbed by the planting medium.

From one basket of dry eggshells, I can get almost one jar which is enough for one fertilization.

How to Use Eggshell Powder

4BA7F9B2-6002-4FD9-98F9-F45F4FF49AC2.jpeg

The plants that I usually give eggshell powder fertilizer to are chilies, cauliflower, cucumbers, tomatoes, and eggplants.

24D3264C-807C-4284-B300-9D053F5C5D8C.jpeg
This time, I will fertilize my tomato plants which are two weeks old after being transplanted.

I sprinkle enough eggshell powder onto the tomato planting medium. But it doesn't stop here, because I will cover them with planting medium again.

2CBB9013-908D-4DFB-91F5-694FF0B07748.jpeg

For the planting medium that covers the top of the plant after being fertilized using eggshell powder, I use a mixture of soil, manure, and burnt rice husks, with a mixture of 2:1:1, with two portions for soil.

So, I cover the eggshell powder of course so that the absorption of nutrients by the plant occurs faster. Organic fertilizer from eggshell fertilizer is also very good as organic fertilizer during the rainy season and it really saves money.

I have also made a video on how to make organic fertilizer from eggshells some time ago, and you can see it on my Youtube Channel. You can click CC (subtitles) for several language options available.

I am very happy that eggshell powder can work well and powerfully in my garden. I have also posted some of the results on Hive. Happy gardening!

Awal kakak 🙂 thanks for sharing. Didn't realize it's protein that help plants. I think I read somewhere it was the calcium base helps to make the soil alkaline, as a result helps in nutrient absorption.

It's pretty cool to use egg shells as a fertilizer. After all many throw these away. In this situation there is less garbage and it goes to good use 😃

I had heard that eggshells were good to put into the soil. I had never seen the process though. I enjoyed seeing what you did to them before adding them to your plants. :)

Ohhh, this is something new to me. We do use leftover eggshells in our plants especially orchids but we don't grind them. We leave them whole on top of the orchids.

It is okay too, but since my garden is vegetable plants so I need faster time to absorb the nutrient. So it is better to grind them first 😊

Hello @anggreklestari. I didn't know that eggshells were a source of protein for a garden. I guess it's a good ingredient that would be fit for composting. I must say that your gardening skills don't resemble those of a beginner. It's good that you are quick learner so that you can put all your research into practice quickly to produce a good gardening season. Your plants look so healthy.

Thanks for sharing this info. Take care and happy harvesting.

Yes my friend
Honestly, I am learning from Youtube :)
Eggshell is good source of calsium for plants, like human, plants also need calsiun especially when the plant need to bear fruit

You know, my husband and I have learned a lot from watching the YouTube "HOW TO" videos when a problem arises with our RV. Now, we've learned not to panic, just go there. Someone somewhere has experienced a similar problem as our, and there's always a DIY'er to show us how to solve the problem. It's saved us a ton of repair costs.

Take care.

My blender broke when I used it to crush eggshells. So, I switched to using a hammer instead. I wrapped the eggshells in a cloth before crushing them with the hammer. =)

I use special 'dry' blender, usually to blend seed-ingredients :)
Eggshells also good to sharpening the blender knife inside :)
Yeah, in the past I also did hammer work ehehe when I was lazy to put slow and slowly amount on blender 😅

I actually do the same when we have empty eggshells, but I don't grind it, because our blender is broken, lol. I simply place them on the pots, hehe

Few month ago, I broke down egg shell and mixed with my pot soil. But it is same now not decompose. To read your post I know that We have to powder it and filter it also for better absorption of nutrients.

Wow, You also used eggshell as organic fertilizer Ma'am. I also did and applied that here in my ornamental plants and vegetables. Truly, crushed eggshells contains lots of nutrients needed for the Plants. I am thankful you shared it here Ma'am so that others can gained lots of ideas about using organic fertilizer.

Thank you for sharing it Ma'am @anggreklestari . 😊

I always always save my egg shells for my garden ever since I realized about a year that egg shells adds calcium to the soil, thereby ensuring proper yielding of our farm products.

I learned that to be absorbed by the plant more quickly, lemon is added to the crushed eggshells, so the calcium they contain is released in a white substance which is mixed with water and the plants are watered.

it is great too when you make liquid fertilizer from eggshells and lemon water 😊

I had heard before that eggshells can be a good fertilizer, but I thought you just had to smash or break them into smaller pieces. The method of grinding them into powder actually makes sense, and it's definitely a more efficient way for them to be absorbed by the soil.

Regarding your gardening, having "started learning this year" means you naturally have a green thumb, because the results look bountiful with all of the vegetables you've been able to produce already. Well done! 👏

Eggshells really are amazing! Not only do we use them to add calcium to the soil ground but also we like spreading the crushed eggshells around the base of our plants. This generally stops slugs and snails and other soft skin insects getting to our seedings and plants. Good work. :)

hello there! @anggreklestari thank you so much for showing this. i usually just place the egg shells on top of the pot. i knew at the back of my head that it could be much better and effective if i made the shells into powder form, but never really got myself to do it. so now that you've shown it, im excited to do it too! Thanks!
