Splinterlands Battle Mage Secrets - Odd Ones Out

Hey!

This week, for the Battlemage Secrets Challenge, we have the “Odd Ones Out” rule. I would usually start posts like this with an introduction about the rule, how it affects us and possible ways to deal with it, however… what is there to say?

Odd Ones Out, only Monsters with odd Mana costs can be summoned; is just a restrictive rule. How much you suffer this rule will depend on the cards you have available to play with, but that has little to do with strategy and more to do with the number of cards players have. Is up to you how much you decide to spend on the game.

The more different cards you got, the less you’ll suffer Even Stevens or Odd Ones Out. There is no room to discuss strategy here.

Lineup & Strategy

This battle was done during a Brawl, in which only Gold Foil cards, from the Chaos and Rebellion sets could be used, with a Silver level cap. Since I was the Arena Host, Quora Towershead was banned. Alongside with these fray rules, the specific battle rules were, apart from Odds Ones Out, “Tis but Scratches”, which gives all Monsters the Cripple ability and “Broken Arrows”, which disallows the use of Ranged attacking cards. Plenty of Mana to spare, 47 and only Dragons inactive in the battle.

I opted to use the strength of Magic in this battle, so I went with the Earth Splinter here, so:

  • As my Summoner Obsidian, who buffs my Magic attacks by one point.
  • Not many options to heal, so I went for a card with many hit points as a tank, in this case the Ulundin Overseer, who doesn’t have an attack, but it allows a Melee Monster to attack from the second position, thanks to his Flank effect.
  • Then, the Pelacor Mercenary. Good card, but I chose him because I didn’t have many options over all.
  • In third position, the Disintegrator. Considering that Ranged attacks were banned, de-buffing either Magic or Melee attacks is a good idea.
  • Next, the Regal Peryton. Strong Magic attack and extremely evasive with it’s six point of Speed, plus the Flying ability.
  • If fifth position, the Mycelic Slipspawn. Strong attack and plenty of hit points, which is good because its Taunt effect allows me to draw attention away from the other cards, holding the line for longer.
  • At last, Djinn Biljka. Luckily for me, I own this card in its Gold Foil version. It’s a very convenient card, because you can slip it in any lineup, thanks to its few Mana requirements. Besides, even though it is a weak card, when talking about Health, it cannot be targeted, thanks to its Camouflage.

Analysis

The battle was a total success, so three points for my Guild. And it was a total success, because I didn’t suffer any loss, so it was an easy victory. The main reason for my win, in my opinion, was the lack of options both of us had in this battle.

We you have so many restrictions, assembling a competitive team is hard. In this situation, particularly, we had tough Brawl limitations… only Gold Foil, only Modern sets, and we also had two big battle rules which were quite restrictive, Odds Ones Out and Broken Arrows.

I believe I won because my opponent didn’t have enough cards to compete and when that happens, you just put a random card after another… that or he was a bot.
