New Player Experience my 2-cents

Introduction

This week’s #TPGChallenge is all about exploring what it takes to attract and retain new players in Splinterlands.

What will draw new players into the game, and more importantly, what will keep them coming back? While big rewards and eye-catching gameplay may initially grab attention, there’s more to long-term player retention than just large green candles and big payouts per battle.

What keeps me hooked in Splinterlands

Let's dive a little deeper and think about what keeps long-term players engaged with the game:

  • Strategic Depth – The combination of tactics and complexity keeps each match fresh.
  • Guild Battles – Working with a team against other guilds adds a sense of camaraderie and competition.
  • Collecting New Cards – The excitement of discovering and acquiring new cards fuels my drive to play.
  • Potential for Growth – Both in terms of skills and rewards, there’s always something to work toward.

What can be improved for new and existing players

In my opinion, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but focusing on player acquisition and retention could be the key to balancing the team economy and ensuring the game’s continued growth.

Achievements & Non-Monetary Rewards

Let players earn more, not just in terms of monetary rewards, but through in-game achievements that provide bragging rights and a sense of accomplishment. This would make exploits in this part of the game less of an issue and add a fun element for players who love to flex.
Here’s where the "glamour" system could come in.

Consider adding

  • Skill Trees/Challenges/Unique Badges
Complete tasks, some example what i mean with this
    • Winning 500 matches with a specific summoner to unlock skins or battle background.
    • Win a battle using three goblins to earn a goblin-specific badge.
    • there are literally hundreds of challenges that can be done even some that might be time based like Halloween challenges
  • Improved Guild Collaboration
The guild system has a lot of potential, but there’s room for improvement:
    • Collaborative Events – Create guild-based events like raids where players work together toward a common goal.
    • Guild Alliances – Allow larger guilds to form alliances for more impactful interactions.

Closing Thoughts

I’m not sure if all of these ideas qualify as "easy wins," and some of them might already be on the team's radar, but here’s my 2-cents. In the end, the more players we attract and retain, the better the team balance sheet get, and the greater the potential for Splinterlands to thrive.

I really hope there are some nice easy wins defined that reach the team. And they might implement quickly without delaying other activities.

That's all for this week hope you enjoyed reading this. See you all on the battlefield.
