Top Of The Food Chain

I think the society is based on influence and power. Those are the key factors that rule a society. No matter how smart you think you are and how qualified you are for a position, someone with a higher influence and power who isn’t as smart as you are could occupy that position that you think is meant for you. We are in a society where people with higher influence and power are at the top of the food chain.

They say get knowledge and get skills but most times someone with none of these could be at the top or even be your boss, you may be wondering why but the answer isn’t far-fetched. It is simply power and influence. In my country, we would say “Connection”. “Tell them Mr A sent you” could give you a job where even your super quality certificate or CV couldn’t get you a job.

I have been in a situation where someone with higher influence and power got what I wanted not because I wasn’t qualified but because I didn’t have the influence or power to make things work for me and to also accompany my qualifications.

In 2016, I was done with high school and it was time to further my education and go into the University. Well since I was applying for a Federal University, there are several exams one has to write that will make you qualify for the particular course of study you were going for. We had to write the JAMB exam first, which is an exam that determines if you will be going to a University or a Polytechnic and this exam also determines if you will be given the particular course you want to study.

After the JAMB exams, and you are then qualified for a University, you will still need to write another exam given by the University which will be added to your JAMB score and if you pass the cut-off mark then you will be given what you want to study. Well, so I thought that there was a cut-off mark in the University I was applying for. I later found out that the University does not release its cutoff mark to the public.

After various exams, I did so well and I was hoping that I would gain admission into the course of study I had chosen. I even had a friend that I had a higher score than she did. She was way below average. Well, I kept my fingers crossed, but in the end, I was shifted to another course of study and not what I applied for.

When I called my friend to tell her, she said she had gotten that particular course for which we both applied. I was shocked but when I told my dad, he told me that there are two people in this world, those who need to work hard to get and achieve what they want and those who just need to make calls and already have what they need. Turns out that this friend of mine, had more influence and power so no matter her score, she was able to get the course she wanted.

In a way, I felt bad but I said to myself that I would work hard to make a name for myself and also have influence and power alongside knowledge and skills.

One thing I have discovered is that those who use power influence to get positions they are not qualified for always live with that fear of being exposed one day. The truth is that working hard is more honorable than having to use connections.

And that is the norm. Even a 10yr old knows that connection is everything in this country. #dreemport

Well that is exactly how terrible the world has turned out to be with connection achieving anything would be a hard rock. But nothing is impossible
