Web 3 Gaming Ecosystems and Growth | Splinterlands and Others

Today we are going to take a look into web3 gaming and see where all the action is. We are also going to take a look at the hive blockchain and of course one of the biggest games on it Splinterlands.

But we are also going to explore other blockchains. What their games look like and what's making them as popular or more popular. This should give us an idea here at Hive on what direction gaming needs to go.

How The Current Space Looks

By using sites like Footprint Analytics we can get an idea in terms of amount of players and what blockchains have the most players on them. We can then further pick them apart per game which is the deeper level I want to get to in this article.

Here's how the current space looks at the moment. This data is pulled from Footprint.Network

Active Players Over Time

As we can see the amount of people playing web3 games has actully slowly been going down across the board. But where do those people spend most of their time on what blockchains?

A very large amount of the gaming space has been contributed to two core blockchains this year. Those being Ronin and Polygon. Hive actully is on this list but it's so dang small you can't even tell. That's actully worrying because there was a time when Hive lead the pack in web3 gaming mainly because of Splinterlands.

Alright so what games are housing the largest amount of players at the moment and what blockchains do they belong to?

The biggest game of them all is Pixels which I'll admit I started playing it myself. Pixels is on the ronin network which explains why Ronin has becomes so popular. This shows what a huge impact a solid game can have on a blockchain.

After that comes Matr1x Fire which honestly feels a lot like a mix between Valorant and CSGO which explains it's up and coming popularity as a good solid game of this style can attract some serious gamers.

After that it starts to get a little closer with games like Sweat Economy which is a walking style tracker. PlayEmber, Apeiron, Alien worlds, Splinterlands is still in the running but for sure is much smaller and I would say it's about the size of Axie Infinity at the moment which is also much smaller than it was at one time.

So your biggest apps right now are mainly Sweat Economy which idk if you can really call that a game but others like Matr1x Fire and Pixels are the biggest blockbusters at the moment with two very different styles of gameplay.

Transaction wise primarily gaming still happens on the Wax blockchain but it's for sure still slumping.

That large teal color is Wax and you can see how much it just dominates every other blockchain. But hive actully isn't all that far behind but has done nothing but shrunk over the last year by a rather large amount. One blockchain that's showing growth is Klaytn and pretty on par with it being near.

I think what we can take away from this is the web 3 gaming space has overall been shrinking even during this bull run. There's simply less players, less transactions overall and more competition in terms of blockchains. However there is one thing on the up and up and that's the amount of $ value being transacted. Even though there are less players and less transactions overall the amount of money being spent has actully doubled since last year during the bear market.

We saw very high buy values on games like Big Time and last month MoBox and even Axie Infinity has grown.

If we look at Hive blockchain overall and all the games on there we clearly see just a massive amount of players overall on Splinterlands. However it's fallen for sure and a part of me things the DAO and voting is actully at fault for this. Now that players can cast their vote on MANY times there seems to be a lot of fighting and tension and if you vote and it doesn't go in your favor of how you voted there seems to be resentment towards the game which is totally wild to me but it's honestly what's happening.

It makes me question if a DAO is a good idea at all honestly because it's pretty clear that people are overall getting angry if something doesn't go their way. When before the company would simply make the change and move on and everyone was ok with that.

It's a weird mindset that I believe is new to web3 gaming. But we can take away from this is the Splinterlands is the sole game that's currently holding hive together and still providing value and great game play in my opinion.

Thanks for the update I have had to step back from the space a little and it's been hard to keep up with everything going on with less time to research.
