There's No Need To Fear A Knockout

In this week’s Battle Mage Secrets, we look at the Heavy Hitters ruleset and see what strategy works when all units get the knockout ability. The knockout ability means doing double damage to a stunned unit.

For this battle, I've gone with Mylor Crowling as my summoner because I want to do Thorns damage to my opponent who would most probably be using melee and range attacks and avoiding magic attacks.

1st position - Mycelic Infantry - Shield to absorb melee and range hits. Decent health and shield.
2nd position - Sandworm - Strong melee and sneak attacker.
3rd position - Goblin Thief - Another sneak attacker to take out my opponent from the back.
4th position - Thane Newsong - To increase my melee attack damage by 1 for all units.
5th position - Ava the Undaunted - Want to use Weapons Training to boost my 0 attack units and give them a decent 3 Range damage.
6th position - Almo Cambio - Fast and a lot of health. With a boosted 3 range attack from Weapons Training, should be quite strong in battle.

The truth about Heavy Hitters is that you don't really have to fear getting knocked out, because there are very few units with the stun ability. Also, stun only triggers 50% of the time. So, the opportunity to have it play out perfectly is quite small. Not saying it can't happen but it's better to prepare a strategy with the other rules in play in mind.

Looking at my opponent's lineup, I was puzzled by his choice of Magic attackers and this could turn out to be a genius move, or a big mistake. We will soon find out.

At the end of round 2, it was quite even and we both had 3 range attackers and one front man. The problem with range units is that they become useless in the front.

But that's why it's important to have fast attacking units. Also units with a lot of health can be quite useful in the front, even if they can't attack. And that's how I was able to grind my opponent down. The Cambio and Ava combo were doing decent damage.

In the end, victory was mine although it did look pretty dicey at one point with my opponent's unexpected use of magic. You can watch a replay of the entire battle here: https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_90291997f00f5f3208b2d0dc1bf81198&ref=charcoalbuffet

So, do you use Stun units to take advantage of the knock Out rules or do you think that it's mostly an after-thought and doesn't matter? That's all for this Heavy Hitters edition of the Battle Mage Secrets. See you in the next one.

It was probably over immediately the Choas dragon was taken out. It was good you prepared for if the opponent didn't bring an all melee cards, could have gone both ways. Big win

The Chaos Dragon was a surprise but the reflect helped to take it out. Magic is still the strongest attack imo.
