SPS Governance Poll - Polls for Tournament Feedback

avatar

Intro

Greetings everyone! About a month ago I ran some polls to gather feedback based on the current state of tournaments and made adjustments based on that initial limited feedback. It's come to my attention that some users feel the previous polls were insufficient and that I should do more to push for greater participation. I can accept that and of course I'd prefer as much engagement on these topics as possible, so that is why you're seeing it show up in the proposal feed in game even though it isn't actually a proposal.

This isn't something I want to get into the habit of doing, so I have briefly discussed the idea of adding a new tab or integrating polls into the in-game governance system in some way in the future with some team members. Preferably these polls would have their own notifications so that people can opt out if they don't want to participate. Please feel free to share your thoughts about whether or not that's something you'd like to see below and if people like the idea I'll pursue it further.

Update

I have been closely monitoring tournaments after the recent changes as I felt there was potential that adding back entry fees would substantially lower participation. To be honest, I was surprised by the results. Yes there are slightly fewer entries, likely from clearing out a lot of multi-accounts and people that were just signing up for everything whether or not they had any intention to participate because it was free.

It's looking like with these recent changes that we're on track to burn roughly 2,000,000 DEC for the first month from these new entry fees. The amount of accounts signing up for tournaments and not participating is down significantly. While I was personally hesitant to add entry fees back to the tournaments, it does appear that things are going pretty well. That of course is just my opinion and it's time to gather feedback based on your opinions now that you've had a month to test out these recent changes.

The Polls

Without further ado, I'd like to share 3 brief polls with you. These polls are meant to help me determine what the SPS Stakeholders want in regards to the current SPS DAO Sponsored Tournaments. Please click through to each of the three links and select the option that you prefer for each poll. You can also engage in discussion around each of the topics presented on their respective posts. I appreciate your time and will work to incorporate any feedback provided to improve the tournament experience however I can. Thanks!

How do you feel about the entry fees for Splinterlands Tournaments?

How do you feel about the prize structure of the Splinterlands Tournaments?

How do you feel about the current number of Splinterlands tournaments?

IMHO:

  1. Entry fee per league tournament is reasonable.

  2. Prize structure for me is good as it is but it can be made better. Larger purse is more attractive.

  3. It's great as it is.

Keep up the great work bro.

In my view, Tournaments right now are completely unfair and stupid. The best way to compare is if there would be a poker tournament with an entry fee but some players get way better odds to be dealt good cards. It's only interesting for those who are able to get the best odds as everyone else is at a massive disadvantage.

Tournaments should be something where everyone always is playing on a level playing field one way or another.

This isn't poker...

No one gets to bid/pay for the cards they get dealt.

Venka (pocket rockets) is 1000X the cost of a venari heatsmith (2-7 off suit).

Sounds like you be more interested if you invested in the cards you want/need.

Yeah, that's so stupid about it! Only when you own all the best cards you can play tournaments pretty much. How the hell do they expect some real adoption for the game with a model like this. For 99%+ of the players, Tournaments are not interested and feel like they get scammed.

99+%... Whah?

This isn't the communist utopia your asking for. It is good and healthy that people can choose to have a deck at whatever level and variety they want.

There are levels to skill and investment.

Good news is with a combo of enough time, effort or investment a player can get to whatever level they want to be at.

Good luck getting where you want to be at.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be a required investment, tournaments would just be way more fun, fair and accessible to more in case there was a dynamic where everyone played on a level playing field. I'm sure there is a way to do this properly. Clearly the current model is not working.

But there are tournaments at different levels: novice, bronze, silver, gold, diamond .. you don't think that helps?

It would be even worse without those. My main point stays which is that tournaments themselves one way or another should always be played on a fully level playing field. This doesn't mean that the entry cost or even the prize money can't vary based on the collection of cards certain players own.

with the current model, tournaments are only attractive for players who own all the cards which is not realistic even at lower levels for most players.

I like the idea of having these polls. What if there was a system in place where anyone can create a poll for a smaller price (eg: 10,000 DEC) and have it appear on a page in game?

I suppose that's an option as well.

  1. Entry fees are reasonable and its great to see ghost accounts cleaned out while adding a healthy DEC burn... Great success!

  2. Structure ranks of prize pay-outs seems fine to me for the most part. However some of the entry costing vs prize ratios seem pretty wacky. Any clarity on how they are decided/calculated?

  3. There's an ok amount of tourneys but if anything I would like to see more of them even if the prizes have to be spread out a bit more.

For 2, I basically calculated the CP of having half the cards of any given set halfway leveled up for the league (back when we had league level limits). The main one that I think is problematic is wild... I may run a poll to see what people think in regards to adjusting the wild CP requirements.

Burning dec is weird in that fees are paid but nobody makes any money out of it.

Is there any way to generate some kind of return to the dao?

I think there are currently too many weak tournaments and that one great one, with lots of prizes, some of them quite chunky,, would be more exciting, attract more players, and be more sponsorable.

I am not against a wide variety of tournaments, quite the reverse, but one that had wide appeal and more value would compel more interest.

One of the first polls was whether we should keep or burn the entry fees and people seemed to really prefer burning it. I haven't heard much to the contrary. I think it's important to keep in mind that for the economy to function it needs both sinks and faucets. We got tons of faucets and not enough sinks right now which is why token prices are so low. We need to keep building more sinks that make sense imo.

I'm happy with how the tournaments are now but glad there are lots of options for people to pick and voice their opinion

  1. I was apprehensive at first, but they appear reasonable, as the prize structure has changed also. So with a good effort, we can cover the entry fees with higher rewards (well, that doesn't always happen, and sometimes I've bombed and not won anything at all, but that's part of the challenge, to at least break even and earn something beyond that).
  2. It's ok. We may prefer it higher, but wouldn't want to affect sustainability.
  3. Ok, as our time is limited anyway - I wonder if (slightly) more may be added during holidays or weekends?

Currently we're working on empowering the community to make some fun ghost card tournaments. We've seen brybro creating a new guild open tournament format using them. A few other creators from the community have been granted permission as well. It will be cool to see how that evolves and perhaps at some point we may see community tournament initiatives become more popular!
