Splinterlands Stats | Sep 2023 | Transactions, Games, Players and Price

How is Splinterlands doing these days? Land is being rolled out in phases, 1.0 is out, 1.5 should be any time soon, with closed beta already available for testing. Meanwhile the bear market is still in force, pushing the price of altcoins, defi and gamefi. Splinterlands has taken a lot of beatings in the last period, with a lot of the assets trading at all time low.
Let’s take a look at the numbers!

The data has been queried from the Splinterlands API in combination with the data from the Hive blockchain.

Number of Transactions

Transactions represent the overall activity in the game. Here is the chart.

Prior to July 2021, the overall data for Splinterlands was low. Then an explosion in the summer of 2021, the number of transactions went up to 5M a day, from the previous 100k daily.
The transactions stayed in the range of 3M to 5M during 2022 as well, but then in 2023 kept dropping to around 800k daily where we are now. It should be noted that transactions were intentionally scaled back with the introduction of anti bot measures in multiple steps.

Number of Battles Played

Here is the chart of the daily numbers of games played for the period.

The chart for the daily battles is very similar to the overall transactions, due to the fact that most of the transactions are battles.
But in the recent times the rentals have also increased and they are now also a large share of the daily transactions on Splinterlands. In the last period there are on average around 500k daily battles out of the total 800k transactions per day.

We can notice the sharp drop in the numbers of daily battles in March 2023, when bots were banned from modern. Previously there was also a drop back in June 2022, at that time there was a change in the daily energy rate, that reduced the rewards if an accounts plays a lot of battles per day.

Number of Renting Operations

The number of renting operations has been growing in the last year and at one point there was more renting operations then any other operation on Splinterlands.
Here is the chart.

Up to March 2023 there was a constant growth in the number of rentals. Then it had a sharp drop. The numbers for rentals kept growing and reached 1.2M operations per day, then a fee was introduced of 1 DEC for each of these operations and they have dropped to around 600k per day in March 2023. This number kept going down in 2023 and now it is around 110k daily operations for rentals.

Number ff Active Players

This is one of the most important metrics for every dApp, how many active users have there are. Here is a data for daily active users [DAU].

Here again we can see the explosion in DAUs back in the summer of 2021 from just 5k up to 500k DAUs. In 2023 this number has been going down, but it seems to be stabilized around 60k DAUs.

If we zoom in 2023 we get this:

At the beginning of the year there was around 200k DAUs. These days the number is close to 50k DAUs. While this is a big drop, it should be noted that in 2023 there was a lot of anti bot measures implemented in Splinterlands, and the overall Splinterlands asset has dropped in value. Meaning that a lot of automated players, but also human players quit. Even so, there are more than 50k DAUs, and that is still a big user base for a crypto app. Actually, it is one of the biggest in the whole industry.

New Accounts Created by Splinterlands

Here are the new Hive accounts created by Splinterlands on a monthly basis.

Some of the values for the data in 2021 are cut off from the chart. This is due to the very high number of accounts created in that period and will obscure the whole chart. Back in September and October 2021, there were more than 200k accounts created monthly from Splinterlands. Millions of Hives were burned in the process.
In 2023 the number of monthly new accounts is between 200 to 500. This is quite the drop, and it is the lowest it has been in a while.

SPS Price

At the end the price for the main token SPS.

The market has been brutal towards SPS. The token was launched in August 2021 and was trading more than 0.5$ for a short period of time. It has dropped massively in 2022 from 0.2 all the way to 0.02 where it finished the year.

In 2023 the tokens have been in the range of 0.015 to 0.022 and it has almost stabilized in value so to speak. If you waited for some cheap SPS this is one of the period where it has been the cheapest.
