A Clue That TikTok Ads Revenue Might Start

source

I was going though some news feed when I bumped into this news that got my attention. It turns out that TikTok wants a big piece of the AI pie and there's one reason for that, advertisement.

I've seen YouTube Shorts and how they've successfully included Shorts ads where the creators can earn from their short less than 60 seconds clips. I'm still surprised TikTok hasn't done this yet but I can't blame them, they got huge not too long ago so would probably need a lot of time and data gathering to be as good as Google's YouTube.

But there's a clue or hint that suggests that TikTok might start serving ads to help its creators all over the world earn money.

ByteDance which as you may already know is the parent company of TikTok and the company seems to be making a serious move in the generative AI space with its new web scraper, Bytespider. For an AI company to effectively train its AI tool, they need data and where do you think they get that from? Us of course.

Everything you share online is data that their AI bots under training takes and users. ByteDance launched this bot quietly in April and I mean why wouldn't they since they're under serious attack from US government regarding User data and privacy policy.

Their Bytespider is capable of pulling data from the web at a staggering pace which is like 25 times faster than OpenAI’s GPTbot. We know OpenAI is the overall boss when it comes to advancement and innovation in AI and they train their AI tools very well with good enough data so for ByteDance to come up with an AI data scraping tool that does that much work is insane.

For those of us who are a bit more skeptical about the ethics of data scraping, this is definitely going to grab attention a lot. I'm already wondering what this will do to user privacy after all the things these giant software industries like Google and Meta are already doing with user data.

Bytespider isn’t just a fast learner like the other AI bit scrapers but it has become one of the most aggressive bots out there.

Research is telling us that it’s even scraping at rates 3000 times that of Anthropic’s ClaudeBot. I think after Chatgpt, Claude is the next best and somethings even outcompetes Claude so to see these numbers for Bytespider, I can't imagine what exactly TikTok will do with it.

ByteDance seems very eager to catch up in the generative AI race and that makes me wonder about the implications of such rapid data collection, especially knowing that scraping usually ignores those robots.txt rules intended to protect a website’s data. The websites are wide up for these AI tech companies and privacy has been thrown into trash at this point.

They're now prioritizing speed over ethics, and I don't know why they would take such a risk especially during this moment where TikTok can be banned in the U.S. due to national security concerns.

As they rush to gather data for their AI models, we have to ask ourselves "at what cost?" Are we really okay with companies skimming the internet for content without considering the rights of the original content creators? Well as long as the content creators are not complaining perhaps all is fine.

The main objective as I mentioned earlier is not about joining the AI race but the company is eyeing a more robust advertising ecosystem, potentially making TikTok an even more powerful player in the digital advertising game.

So yes, you might start seeing lots of ads on your TikTok feed next year.
