Happy smile

===.jpg

When was the last time you thought about what makes you smile, I mean actively and willfully thought about the things that make you happy? I think the answer should be, "today" but for many of us life gets in the way, all those things we have to think about and do, and we tend not to have, or make, the time to think about what essentially is one of the core things every human being should be looking for in their lives; happiness.

That coffee in the image...I'd walked into a small cafe and upon being asked by the girl at the counter how I was going, I'd answered without much enthusiasm, not rudely, but without displaying much of a zest for life in that moment. I mumbled something about not being all that great because I was working. She replied with something like, oh that's sad, I hope I can improve your day a little.

It was a reality check.

Sure, I wasn't having the best of days, was busy, sort of snowed under really, and in some physical pain which wasn't improving my mood...but in hindsight I don't think they were causes to display a rather miserable version of myself to that young lady. I moved off to sit down and await the coffee I'd ordered and when it arrived...well, there was a smiley face on it and it made me smile.

As the put the coffee down in front of me the girl told me that she hoped I cold find something to be happy about and that the smiley face on my coffee was to inspire me to find my own; my own smile.

Isn't it interesting how messages and prompts sometimes come through right when we need them and from such unexpected sources?

I sipped my coffee, looked around at my environment, the river drifting lazily by, tree branches swaying in the breeze, the warmth of the sun on my back, birds calling and flying through skies of a vivid blue, and felt a little disappointed in the way I'd responded to that girl and more in respect of my own mood and attitude. Sure, I had some issues in the moment, but life wasn't all bad...it was, in fact, pretty damned good in many aspects.

That realisation, and the process of reaching it thanks to that young lady, put a happy smile on my face and gave me a little kick in the ass I clearly needed in that moment making me reevaluate how I was thinking, my attitude and subsequently, actions.

I finished my coffee and prior to leaving walked the empty cup back into the cafe, it seemed helpful and gave me a chance to smile at that girl and thank her for bringing me to that little realisation which improved the rest of the day and has stuck with me also.

I think it's important to actively pursue happiness, to think about it and those things that help us find it; In doing so we're a little more able to put everything into perspective and, as we all know, we gravitate towards what we think about most.

I wonder if you've had such moments, realisations, that have caused you to adjust your thoughts, attitudes and the actions that follow. If you have and want to share them please do so in the comments.

Indeed. Happiness is normally found on the little things! And a big thumbs up for the girl's attitude.

Yes indeed, people miss many of the small things that present themselves often, that can contribute to happiness because they are too busy looking for the big things that come less often.

I had a lady who I used to work with stumble upon my Facebook profile at some point and when she saw the (limited) photos of me she reached out to me and told me that I should smile more at work. It's actually pretty rare the number of people who get to see me smile these days.

I find those people (at work or otherwise) who stick their faces in other people's and say, "smile," to be annoying and selfish cunts who have no idea what a person might be going through internally or in their life that might cause them not to be smiling at that given point. It's rude, selfish and ignorant. A much better way to do it perhaps would be to (genuinely) ask, "are you ok?" and then (genuinely) care about the response.

Yeah, that is definitely a better way to approach it I think. I usually do have a lot going on in my head at any given moment and I am usually just trying to keep it all straight, so being sure I am smiling is not at the top of mind for me!

It is very important to be happy in life, because if you are not happy, nothing in the world is good for you. A little happiness teaches people to save. The biggest thing in life is to keep yourself happy. It is our duty to do whatever pleases us. Best wishes to you, may you always have a happy day.

The biggest thing in life is to keep yourself happy.

I agree, the difficulty sometimes is making sure that one makes oneself happy, and that happiness doesn't then cause someone else to be unhappy.

We all have done it at some point, but I have a defect that hides my mood and is that I always laugh at almost everything even when I have lived painful things, but really when I'm happy I laugh out loud. I always try to be positive and see the good side of things, otherwise believe me, I wouldn't be in this world anymore.

"Laughter is the best medicine," they say, although I think it's not meant to be taken literally. Being happy and smiling is a better way to be than the opposite, but, because we're all human, we cannot be that way all the time.

We need to smile, there are things that upset us but there are so many reason why we need to smile that bring joy to other.

Being happy is a better state to be in than being unhappy, the trick is creating more of the former and less of the latter in one's life.

Life sometimes stops us in the least expected place to look around. What beautiful eyes that cup of coffee has! 😁 Hahaha... hope you are feeling better and relieved of the pain you had.

The googly eyes are pretty and those were designed for you. 😅

Find your happiness... Yeah, I need to do that often. I work in a high stress environment with high stress people. I need to detox it otherwise I would never be able to survive the week.

It's in finding those ways to do so, whatever they may be, that a person Kan move closer to happiness, although no human is without sadness and troubles; it's those that make happiness so much better.

Indeed. You get some people who present themselves to the public as though everything is fine and nothing is wrong.

What I call "Facbook Plastic" but who are we kidding? It it some sort of self-image-ego to present yourself as thought you have the good life. Do they live there mentally, denying what is wrong in their life?

I think that is dangerous for oneself.

So it is a balance. Find happiness, acknowledge sadness and its causes, understand it, and then being content in the fact that you are alive and able to affect those things. I think? Am I making sense? I'm still waking up.

When was the last time I thought something that made me smile? A few hours ago when I woke up and just now I'm playing with my cats, they are always calling me!

That girl was at the right time to say... life is beautiful, smile!

Normally, if I am in a bad mood, I usually think and imagine things that make me smile, usually people, beautiful memories, the nice things I have and look at a plant, a flower or my cats. That takes me out of the bad thinking and changes my pole.

Hi Galen, knowing how to read reality is a great virtue, to catch those signals that tell us: don't get bitter for no reason, there are many things to celebrate,

Answering the question: I had one of those moments tonight. In a dream.

It's not possible for a person to be perpetually happy, but it's possible to keep aiming at it.

A person who is always smiling would probably be crazy, but having anchors that give a good perspective when things are not going well is important. At least I look for them when reality goes wrong.

I try at all times to channel my inner Pollyanna. “There is something about everything that you can be glad about, if you keep hunting long enough to find it.”

It requires a conscious effort at first, then becomes habit, a good habit, and from there things get better.

I like this story.

It truly is easy to kind of mentally get caught up in a handful of small negatives. I have been mostly an upbeat person. I always thought I was just born that way. Still, through hard times, for a moment it was hard to see the light. Fortunately, that hardly ever lasted for too long.

I am good at talking myself up, but I will admit I have to do that more as I've aged than I did before. If I look at the over all picture of my current situation, I have it made, but momentarily there are so many things that need to be done and gotten into order, it mentally looks like one of those broken tree and debris jam-ups in the floods!

It's easy to lapse into negative feelings/mindset and a little more difficult to break out if it; that requires some work. It's achievable though, small positives, shifts of attitude, and so on can reverse the cycle. I get what you're saying in your last lines, we all feel that way I think. Small steps in the right direction will move us there however.
