Battle Mage Secrets, Weekly Challenge, Briar Patch!

I have to hand it to the artists over at Splinterlands, these images for the Battle Mages just keep kicking it! They are amazing, so let’s stop, admire it……… Just the different people are amazing... okay now back to the secret for this week, the Briar Patch, so anti-melee, but this is a great way to challenge the way that you think when it comes to the fights!

First, let’s talk about this ruleset, Briar Patch, this means that every time a melee monster hits they will be taking damage, unless they have an ability to stop it, more on that in the tips, this is called the Thorns ability. Amplify is also a great way to make sure that they take more damage back, so you kind of want to avoid most melee monsters in these fights.

The battle that we are examining for this one is a lower mana cap at 28 plus:
Briar Patch: All Monsters have the Thorns Ability.

A lower end one for me on this, it is just one rule, pretty straight-forward fight in that regards.
Here is the quick link to the battle, from the Modern Gold League: (Link) however, I will break it down, then you might want to watch again.

First up, the Summoner:

Knowing that I wanted to stay away from melee type of monsters I wanted have a summoner that boosts either ranged or magic damage, Obsidian gives me that magic boost.

The front line was Mycelic Slipspawn

A really good tank that works well with the heavy amount of hit points. The 2 magic damage that increases to 3, a great addition, the taunt does keep them away from my other monsters, but I was looking for the health and the damage in this one.

The next card is a great card for the 0 mana cost:

I put this one in the second spot to give some extra time, knowing melee, it will die quickly.

Next up is a fun card, with a couple of reasons on this one:

This card does some damage, not consistent on one with the scatter shot, but I was looking at the life leech ability, it increases max health, so it will get stronger as the time goes on, which I pair it with the next card for a combo. It is in the 3rd spot to gain a few health before it will hit the tank spot.

Next up is a the combo card with 2 of the 3

This card does good damage, but I am looking at it’s 2 abilities, the tank heal, which will keep the Slipspawn and the Madcap into the fight longer, which is good. The next ability, Affliction, means that they higher level monsters with higher hit points, will not be able to heal, important.

This is just a filler card since I had 2 mana left after the hefty cards up front, but 1 damage every round is not a bad thing. Also, I have this one here incase they do try to sneak attack, it will give the front a little time.

Another good reward card, at level 2, 2 magic damage, which becomes 3 with Obsidian, but with only 3 mana cost, a good addition!

So, my initial thoughts on this one is that I really wanted to get some ranged or magic damage into the pile since I won’t be taking damage from those style of attacks. I wanted to target the front so that the heals will help keep my tank into the fight longer, but then still doing consistent damage. I also knew my tank would die, so what did I have for backup, the madcap that will be growing in health each turn.

My strategy worked, I lost of my team, but having Biljka in the back kept strong damage going. Madcap lasted 1 extra round, they were doing a lot of damage to me, but in the end it worked out. They did have armor, which meant that my acid shoot did nothing, but became an important tank in the end to keep things alive and give me the win!

Things to keep in mind with the Briar Patch ruleset:
• Melee will take damage, look for Ranged and Magic attacks to counter
• Speed can become important, you hit first you take less damage
• Look for the Reflection Shield on Melee, they will not take damage from Thorns
• Look for the Amplify ability, if they choose to hit you, they take more damage
