Being a new Splinterlands player
New players are needed for our game to thrive. Unfortunately, even though the game is fun and challenging it seems it's not easy to onboard new players.
I activated my dormant second account in Splinterlands to experience starting from Bronze league. I borrowed a gold Chaos Legion deck from Nfty Arcade. Though this is purely CL cards with no reward/promo/Riftwatcher cards, I had high expectations since I have a complete leveled up deck. However, after three days I struggeled to advance past Bronze II. My results were disappointing and my rental was cancelled probably due to low earnings.
My takeaways:
New players are at disadvantage because there are cards out there that they have no access to when starting like the Soulbound reward cards. For example, Lobb Lowland + Quora combo is just OP in bronze.
A complete CL deck is not enough if you want to progress. You need to buy/rent key meta cards. Either the CL reward card, Riftwatchers or the new Rebellion set.
Aside from cards, you also have to rent SPS if you want to earn higher.
The above takeaways are what new players will probably consider if they want to start or continue playing Splinterlands. However, right now, having experienced being a "new player", I find it difficult to compete and progress.

It is difficult at the start but if you keep playing at Silver league you will enjoy the game.
My recommendation has always been to rent enough cards to get out the Bronze league
Happy season end

I agree that for a new player it is almost impossible to get anywhere. The game is advertised as free to play, but then you're told to buy a $10 spellbook to be able to earn anything. The spellbook isn't enough though, you need to spend at least as much on cards just to get out of Novice! The game also says player's have complete control over their assets. Maybe that was true long ago, but it isn't now with the soulbound cards. Players can't even burn their reward cards for DEC to buy others!
Luckily there are plenty of giveaways that lets people win both DEC and cards, and with some luck new players might be able to find someone who can delegate a few cards to give at least a fighting chance to play Bronze.
