Art Experiment #2: The Water Elemental (Sculpture)
This time I decided to try something different, I'm aware that my drawing skills, both handmade and digital are really poor, comparable to a five years old child's skills...if he draws using the weak hand.
So I decided to try to make a sculpture as a subject for the Art contest, hoping to have at least a chance to compete with some tremendous artists I noticed in the previous Art posts.
I run (with my girlfriend) a handmade jewelry shop online so I'm a bit more confident with the sculpturing, I'll add the link to the Instagram page at the bottom of the article if someone is curious.
After deciding the art I needed a subject, I chose the Water Elemental because it has amazing artwork but not too many small details, so I could try to replicate him decently.
Great artwork, and a nice card.
So I took my tools of the trade and I started thinking about how to realize it, I quickly noticed that the Water Elemental has the waist of a top model and the chest of Jason Momoa so I added a new precious tool: the toothpick.
Das (self-hardening clay), knife, toothpick, and water. I'm sorry for the "The Hobbit" mug, I bought it before seeing the movie, tremendous mistake, at least Gandalf is always fierce
After preparing everything I started from the base, so I started modeling the tail and I noticed that it would have been practically impossible to replicate the second twist of the tail because the statue would have been too unstable, so I modeled it to be stable.
I know, it looks like a turd.
Finished the tu...tail I prepared the chest and the arms, with three difficult to model and unstable claws each. The chest was too heavy and the Das too soft for the model to stand, so I used my precious toothpicks to give stability.
In the upper left corner you can see why I can't participate in the contest drawing something.
So I finally modeled the head and finished the basic model securing all parts under Gandalf's supervision.
I would say acceptable.
Now there was a new problem, I had to wait two days for the clay to become solid and steady, but I was so impatient to share something of my creation that I had to post a Giveaway about it: https://www.splintertalk.io/@magalli/giveaway-1-guess-the-subject-an-win-an-epic-card, I posted a small detail of the sculpture and I promised an Uraeus(epic reward card) to the first who would have guessed the subject looking at the photo.
Who has three claws and a toothpick as a hand?
Eight people participated in the contest and only one guessed, winning the prize: @henruc . Good job Henruc and thanks to all other participants, I promise I will publish new giveaways in the future.
Anyway, now let's keep talking about my creation, after two long days of waiting it looked like this:
Unfortunately the right hand was a bit weak, but I managed to fix it, if someone tries to screen and mint as an NFT the "Carrot Cake" masterpiece I will talk with my lawyers.
Two days passed, so I was able to give the first coat of paint, I choose a dark blue, trying to be faithful to the original blue color.
It starts to look more like a Water Elemental and less like a Gravel Elemental.
Another long day passed, no new giveaways, but a new coat of paint, lighter, to give a bit more of a water sensation.
Now it really looks like the Water Elemental, I hope.
I wasn't happy yet, because, in my opinion, it wasn't "wet" enough to be a Water Elemental, so I added a covering layer of transparent paint to help it look more realistic.
Let's wait another day!
So after putting on "Easy" by Hammeley (since 1922, they say) this is the final result:
A bit wetter, Easy job.
Obviously, I wasn't satisfied yet because, concerning art, even the context is important, so to finish my Water Elemental and to participate in the contest, I used a bit of photoshop to give an extra kick to my Sculpture:
That's it, I hope you will appreciate it, it has been really hard to create but, at the same time, really interesting.
Best regards,
Mr.Magalli
