This week’s battle mage secrets focuses on the Wands Out Ruleset.

Wands Out ruleset only allows magic monsters in battle. To succeed in this ruleset, you need to either capitalize and look to exploit the magic-only damage with summoners that have synergies with magic damage or incorporate abilities that can help counter the magic damage. If feasible it is important to prioritise summoners and monsters that provide or reduce magic damage (e.g., Thaddius Brood, Obsidian), or provide magic buff/debuff abilities like Magic Reflect to reflect magic damage back to the attacker, Void to reduce magic damage, and Void Armor to deflect magic damage to armor first. If you have a fleshed-out collection and have legendary summoners like Mimosa Nightshade and Immortalis – these summoners will give friendly monsters Void ability. Also, monsters with the Silence ability (e.g., Goblin Psychic, Ruler of the Seas) are especially powerful in this ruleset.

  • Mother Khala (Summoner): +1 health to all friendly monsters.
  • Iziar: primary tank + high health + Taunt and Void abilities.
  • Divine Healer + Djinn Renova: support magic damage + healing and health buffs.
  • Temple Priest + Dax Paragon: support magic damage + debuffs.

When faced with restrictive rulesets, players are confronted with a decision: concede the battle due to an insufficient line-up or take the chance, gambling on the hope that the opponent faces a similar dilemma. This battle’s rulesets, Wands Out, Counterspell, and Enrage all complemented each other well. Leveraging Iziar as the primary tank in the first position with its Taunt and Void abilities, coupled with high health, Iziar became an ideal choice for absorbing all damage. The backline was monsters all played their part with relevant buffs and debuffs as well as providing support damage. The opponent struggled to meet the mana cap, lacking enough magic monsters as described earlier and later. The battle unfolded with the opposition unable to counter Iziar and we secured an easy victory.

Do You Like the Wands Out Ruleset? Why or Why Not?

While I find restrictive rulesets less appealing, as they often favor players with extensive collections, I love playing with magic monsters in splinterlands. The dichotomy of choice they present adds variety, allowing players to decide between a full-on aggressive approach, aiming to out-damage the opposition, or a more defensive strategy, focused on debuffing opponents into submission. However, it is crucial to note that some monsters with key magic abilities are expensive, potentially creating a disparity for players on a budget. For new players, spreading funds across a well-rounded collection might be more beneficial than investing heavily in a few powerful magic monsters and summoners.
