Splinterlands - Too Pricey to Play, for Me!
So I thought I'd have a dip back into playing Splinterlands again, just for a season.
It's worth having a look every now and then and I wanted to try out Modern League now without the untamed cards...
And also with the recent changes - such as the end of tiers meaning one can play maxed level cards at maxed level all the way down in Bronze!
My experience thus far this last week has been one of bullying my way up with a maxed deck of chaos and half maxed deck of Rift Watchers, I have almost no Rebellion cards, but as a result of playing I am now a little bit more familiar with them and I've decided what I'd like roughly in this order...
Moxian Rebel
I like weapons training - and this is a neutral card, I can imagine combining this with Bajikera or Riftwing and whatever other no attack cards there are.....
However it's $60 to take it up to L4 where it gets camo, so over $100 to get it up to 2 magic damage, on a par with my older cards...
Seveyar...
Another neutral and what a perfect match for the weapons training card - only L3 to get it protect, repair and cleanse, three very useful buffs.... oh and blind, not too fussed about amplify either.
Water Splinter: Deadblast
Again weapons training, I like! And swiften, triage and dodge, all great, but $200 for a max, yowser!
I occasionally play fire
And this thing is a BEAST - 5 opportunity damage for the same mana, this would be fun to play!
But damn those price tags....
I think I'd also need an Avina of the Wolfe Life summoner, I like the speed or heal buffs, so that's at least $200
And then with all of these 'better' (IMO) cards one is looking at $1000 to be able to supplement one's Chaos and Rift deck.
The problem... I wasn't prepared to pay the approx $6K you needed in packs to get maxi decks a few months ago, I'm still not prepared to pay $1000 now to get the select best cards to play.
I could probably amass a couple hundred dollars by selling off odds and sods not on land, but that wouldn't even touch what I feel I'd need to be properly competitive with some of these more expensive more recent cards.
It's just not worth it for me, I don't play enough.
And these are limited time cards anyway...!
And then that's another rub... even if I did spend $1000, I could obvs spend more, to max out my fun, there's just gonna be another bunch coming along in a year or so.
So I'm happy to be able to play with what I've got but at these prices I'm not Vesting, it ain't worth it!
Patience...?
Yes I think so, I'll play out this season, then just go back to renting what I've got and maybe return in a few months, the prices would have come down, probably.
But I don't know if I'd buy even then... I'd want to be paying a few hundred rather than a couple of thousand for a proper in-point.
It's tricky!

I guess in a way it's good that Chaos is so dirt cheap so if people wanted to get in they can lol The new sets actully holding some decent prices which is a nice change but we are still feeling the massive hyper inflation I'm not sure if we are ever going to get out of it now.
I've not played in ages. The game was heading for 'pay to play' and I am not prepared to spend that much on it. I'd have little idea of how it all works now. I just rent out my cards and mess around with the pools to get some income. I've invested enough time and money in it, but maybe it's still fun for others. Either that or they just treat it as an investment.
I got a couple of bits of land, but am not doing anything with those.
Is it still possible for someone to buy a starter pack and make progress if they just play?
I agree with you about Splinterlands became "pay to play". Frankly speaking, I will not buy the starter pack and play the game now. It became too complicated for new players to join and understand the whole eco system. The team is too greedy to take the money from players.
It used to be a fun little game, but it has become too complex. With things like land you had to invest a lot to earn anything. I get that they need money coming in and not just people 'milking' it, but I lost interest. When I did play I was often against bots and that is no fun. I just take the passive income from it now.
i mean...the prices were driven by demand. when the masses arrived there wasnt enough to go round! So they printed lots of chaos legion, and now its relatively cheap to buy some cards and play....but it looks like it could well get cheaper! Which might be a good thing, because if they ever come to market the game, new players will want to be able to get involved. Bots have been mostly ousted from the game, although i think the team plans to implement their own bots to ensure that there is always a battle to be fought....but they wont be milking rewards, just improving game experience. Land isnt for everyone of course....it is set to be quite complex and will appeal to resource management geeks who effectively have to treat it like business. Personally im quite excited about it despite the reality that I probably wont be very good at it!
In my opinion, splinterlands was the victim of its own success. It was ahead of the curve and caught a big wave before it was ready to surf. The decisions made were naïve and overly ambitious, expectations were set far too high and resources were squandered left, right and centre. However, the team continue to pour love and hard work in to the project and the approach is a lot more focused and mature than before. I think as Hivians we would do well to remain positive about the game because for a while it was the closest thing we had to a killer app and honestly I think with all our support it can do it again.
I can agree that they built something amazing and got a buzz going. I played it a lot for a while, but part of the reason for stopping was that it was eating time. I never got into automating my playing as I couldn't see the point. I pay a service to manage my rentals instead, but the income from that is not much. Maybe it will improve if the game really takes off.
I think matters might have been helped if more players had got into other aspects of Hive, but it was barely mentioned on the game site. Hive has potential as an alternative to some things on reddit and Discord as a social platform based around interests. We need more people doing the social stuff.
I'm concentrating more on music stuff these days. Got various things going on and some will be on Hive, like the Vibes contest.
!BEER
yeh its been great to see vibes taking off!
i wonder if the social side of hive would be better if you didnt have to confirm everything on the blockchain? That way people could use it predominantly 'transaction free' and then commit stuff to the blockchain as and when they become accustomed to it, or when it feels absolutely necessary. i love the idea of bringing back profile pages...you know like myspace, with pictures and music and animated nonsense and collectibles and fun stuff. More fun basically. thats what we need round here. And chat rooms that arent on the blockchain. Theyre just on the side of your screen or something. Wheres my dev team? I have DEMANDS!
There are some attempts at 'light' accounts that are linked to Twtr or something, but I've not looked into that. Maybe someone could build that sort of profile page onto the blockchain, if there is demand. The platform won't stop you doing it anyway.

.Guess due to the shake in web 3 and less stability on the hive blockchain hence the change in price for the game. Good luck winning next season
Normally, do you have your cards rented out? Has rental income moved up a bit?
My rental income has increased a bit but it's still nothing compared to before Rebellion :(
Yeah, looks like we need that New Player Experience to hopefully attract lots of new players that will rent some cards. Especially the one-click rent button will be useful for new players and for the rental market.
The problem is that you need to spend at least 5k on Rebellion to have the cards and you are near sure that the values of your cards will drop off a cliff once the new set comes out and a lot more when it gets dumped into wild. So basically you are spending a ton of time to only earn a small part of the price decrease back.
This dynamic makes it impossible to further invest in the game. I hope they start putting some effort in fixing the issue of declining card prices.
Sheesh! I'm really surprised to see how well you speak Mandarin Chinese. I couldn't understand a single word you wrote. At least in terms of its meaning. ;o)
You also have to consider that if you buy those cards now, chances are that their price will significantly decline a few months from now.
It's practically guaranteed, a price drop@
