Passions of Kerala Banana Leaf Rice

We had banana leaf rice at the best indian restaurant IMHO in Penang... Passions of Kerala.

Banana Leaf Rice has its roots in South India, where it is called “Thali.” The dish was introduced to Malaysia by South Indian immigrants who came to the country in search of work. Over time, the dish evolved to include Malaysian spices and ingredients, and became a popular meal among Malaysians.

The main ingredients used to make Banana Leaf Rice include rice, vegetables, curries, and various types of meat. The rice is typically cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves, which gives it a fragrant and slightly sweet flavour. It comes with 3 different types of curry.. chicken, fish and crab! The vegetables used in the dish can vary, but often include items such as cabbage, pickles, dried chili, okra, and green beans. You can top additional rice and curry for free!

The curries used to flavour the rice and vegetables are typically made with a blend of Indian and Malay spices, including cumin, coriander, turmeric, and chilli powder. These curries can be made with chicken, fish, or mutton, depending on the diner’s preference.

In addition to the rice and curries, Banana Leaf Rice is often served with a variety of side dishes. These can include items such as papadum (a type of crispy, thin bread), pickles, and chutneys.

We ordered ours with sides of Fried Fish and squid for a crunchy component to go with our curry.
