Splinterlands Strategies: Hoard Your Food!
I remember writing a Splinterlands article about ‘Grain’ long ago. It was from September 2023 over a year ago, and I am glad I took my own advice and never sold even one ration of Grain.
Since @cryptomancer took the Land development over the controversial proposal, which is not so contentious anymore, at 93% in favour, I have noticed something:
…'land types that generate food are going up in price'…
It's been well known for a while that once Land 1.75 is released which could well be in January 2025, Grain is going to become a lot more scarce. 75% of your daily yield will magically become Wood, Stone or Ore overnight.
While Land 1.75 is not especially exciting, it lays down another layer of the foundation of things to come (assuming Splinterlands does not go belly up).
I am quite fortunate that my main region of Celestine is filled with Lakes. My workers could well be sick of devouring fresh Salmon every day but you have to feel pity for those gnawing on the bark of frozen Tundra wood.
...'I cursed once about the number of Lakes I had, now I feel fortunate to have these and many more'...
Land appears to have hit the bottom and I have yet to see a Plot go for less than $10, unless you count $9.99.
There are still plenty going for just over $10 in those new-fangled areas within the Shimmering Plains.
Who would want Land there, some might say? ‘Proper Land’ is in the Pristine NorthWest or the Broken Lands. Land Snobbery may well become a 'thing' one day. Don't say I didn't warn you.
At just over $10 you can buy Desert and Canyons in ‘Central Fire’. Not a bad territory and those lands will eventually yield Stone.
Well yum, yum, if you buy a bunch of these… your monsters will soon have no teeth left unless you intend on shipping in Grain using that hefty 12.5% export tariff.
Now, take a look at what's for sale today, and I mean the 'Food Generating' types of land, which are Plains, Lake, River and Bog. The last one never seems quite right in my head, Swamp Juice or Rotting Ferns; take your pick?
If we apply filtering to the Food Producing lands, then it’s a different story with prices starting at $18.70 and most being around the $20 mark.
Only yesterday I had my eye on a Bog being sold by @joshman in Briarwood, a region where I have several other lands. It would have served me well as a support plot for the other ones but as of this morning that $17 plot had vanished from the marketplace. Grrrr.....
@joshman may well be thinking about why all his 'Food Producing' lands are being sold and yet the Jungles and Swamps he has are still available, well I am letting you know my theory.

@joshman seems to have lost faith in Land over the proposal and he may well be correct in getting out. Who the fuck knows what is going to happen.

What I would say to anyone thinking of picking up these lands is to be aware of what you are buying. Come January 2025, it's going to get a lot tougher to feed your workers if you don't have lands that produce a food type (for now it's all Grain).
Try and buy Grain lands in the same region as the majority of your other lands, or else the taxman is going to weigh heavily on your resources, and even worse you may have to 'buy' Grain. Who would have thought this possible?
Follow @khazrakh's example. He has seen this coming and is going all in Grain before the auto-switch takes place, regardless of land type.
Don't trade your Grain for DEC, for now, it's not worth it and once Land 1.75 is released there is going to be a shift in mentality; 75% less Grain than before, that's a massive difference.
Winter is coming, stock up your food while you can, Wood is coming, and NO... not Morning Wood.

I guess it's different in being able to actually earn something of value, but people love casual games. Rising Star is of that ilk and it's about all I play.
Land is full of statistics and numbers, it's more of management simulation. My kind of thing.

This update is going to make things a lot more interesting again.
With now 4 instead of 1 resource needed to generate SPS and research (which hopefully will have a use case by then), not many of us will still be able to be fully self sufficient.
As you highlighted, I'm trying to squeeze out as much grain as I can before my barren land freezes over and I won't get any more of it.

I know you are a region owner but I figure some regions may be more bountiful than others when it comes to Food. That's something else I am going to check on in a future post via a Python script.
I have very little Stone and Ore lands, but lots of Food and Wood. Peons like me will need to buy some resources,
Even at a region level, you will have to buy some resources if you want to make the most of your production capacity.
I actually think they did this in a pretty clever way - all regions I've checked are lacking in one, usually two of the resources while they will have an overproduction of the other two.
This leads to more market transactions, which leads to more DEC being burnt, which then helps us all. There's still a chance that this whole thing will go the way of the Dodo, but I feel like we are more and more on track.
There is, but like a gambler I feel myself being pulled in ever the more. I am going to stop, or at least trade some plots for others. I have isolated Tundas with no support.., bought cheap and without thought.

I'm going to hope and I think I'm right in thinking this is that land 1.75 will not have warehouses yet which means all of that grain you stocked up will still sit in your account and can be used as you like without spillage or spoilage?
I don't think you need warehouses, it just sits in your account. Unless other things are changing that have not been announced yet. Spoilage I think would be a little much and piss everyone off.
😂 I think you're right on that but they do seem to piss a lot of people off anymore. Excited to finally see something from land after so much time. Now I have much more reason to get all of these plots operational by end of year.

Seeing Land selling for so cheap looks so odd to me: when I joined the floor price was over 100 bucks and I was like "if only I could go back in time and buy it when it was at 10"... and then now it went down to 10 and I'm like "nope, not interested"... if life is a circle I guess in a few years I may regret it again and feel really, really dumb 😂
LOL, I know that feeling, but also feel Land is at, or close to the bottom. Now could be a time to get your fill.
What is stopping me from getting one is that I don't have the cards to fill it and I don't want to end up owning an asset which I can't use in any ways: right know I'm completely focused on making my cards and SPS as much productive as I can, and Land doesn't seem to fit my strategy well enough... I guess I'm going to remain a peasant 🤣

In theory, but regardless of what your workers are digging for.., they all need feeding when a regional harvest is activated.
This is one of my regions and you can see the deficit between grain yield and usage. The region gets more grain than it uses, but many of those plots are Jungles which right now, are grain farms.
When 1.75 comes in, they will switched to log cabins, and so that deficit will then be in the negative. The are gathering wood, but still need feeding.
This is why I feel the 4 food types of land will become more valuable than the others. Everyone will gain wood/stone/ore, but they will also gain a negative deficit.
Interesting, I need to do some math on this!
Thankfully it is land, so there is no real rush I don't think!

I haven't really been keeping up with the land news/timeline, but this is an interesting development. Grain production going down that much while being a necessary resource is going to shake things up a lot. Similar to the Keep research post, I think it is very nice of you to share this knowledge with the community. I wonder if this post will trigger FOMO in some people and make grain producing land prices go much higher.
But did you notice, at SPS pools, we have DEC/GRAIN now, so we can keep it nicely while generating some kind of return.

Just be sure all purchased lands are in the same region to avoid the 12.5% tax. Your Epic is a food generator, the best natural type.
