Mox Confederation
“All as one.”
Overview
The Mox Confederation consists of three city-states—Mox City, Meridian, and Port Continental—unified under a semi-direct democratic federal republic. The triumvirate of power within the confederation is distributed among the People’s Assembly (legislative), the High Council (executive), and the High Court (judicial).
Nestled on the bay at the foot of the majestic Mount Mox, Mox City straddles the border between the Land of Prosperity and the Central Fire. As the oldest and largest Praetorian settlement of immigrants, the city radiates a historical charm and, coupled with the high-level tournaments and ranked battles hosted in the Golden Arena, has attracted tourists for centuries. The city's vibrant economy relies heavily on this tourism, offering an array of inns, taverns, and other attractions.
Port Continental is located on the southern coast of the Land of Prosperity at the mouth of the South Branch River. As a bustling hub of commerce, it oversees the passage of nearly 5,000 vessels annually, forming a significant gateway for grain, ore, lumber, and trade.
Meridian lies at the headwaters of the Hallowfel River on the Grand Praetorian Plain in the Land of Prosperity. It serves as a central trade conduit and facilitates a robust network with Port Continental along the Hallowfel, significantly contributing to the economic strength of the confederation.
Despite its economic influence and geographical expanse, the Mox Confederation staunchly adheres to a policy of neutrality, avoiding any military, political, or economic alliances. However, it still maintains diplomatic relations with its neighbors and has served as an effective intermediary in disputes between other sovereignties. Consequently, the confederation has become a symbol of peace within the Splinterlands.
Governance
The government of the Mox Confederation is organized as follows:
- The People’s Assembly is divided into two chambers: the State Assembly and the Republic Assembly. The State Assembly has 15 representatives (5 each from Mox City, Meridian, and Port Continental) who are elected under a system independently determined by each city-state. The Republic Assembly has 66 representatives elected under a system of proportional representation that reflects each city-state’s population. Through referendums and initiatives, the citizenry may challenge any law passed by the Assembly and introduce amendments to the confederation’s constitution.
- The High Council is a collegial body of 3 members elected by the Assembly. It directs the federal government and its administration and serves as a collective head of state.
- The High Court is also elected by the Assembly. It hears appeals against rulings of the city-states and their courts.
Economy
The Mox Confederation’s economy thrives on tourism, trade, and agriculture.
As a hub for spectators of the Arena Games, Mox City has a bustling service sector with inns, taverns, and attractions contributing to its revenue. It also offers ancillary services such as transportation, food services, and merchandise related to the Games.
Port Continental and Meridian primarily focus on trade. Port Continental, with its strategic location at the mouth of the South Branch River, serves as a transit point for an array of goods, including grain, ore, lumber, and produce, which bolsters its economy. Meridian, located on the Grand Praetorian Plain, is a major trade link to Port Continental via the Hallowfel River, further enhancing the Confederation's economic robustness.
Additionally, agriculture and fishing industries are well developed in the Confederation due to its fertile plains and access to the Primordic and Splinter Seas and other rich fishing grounds.
The Confederation primarily uses Gloridax coinage. However, because of its wide trade networks, almost all currencies are accepted as legal tender. Barter trade also flourishes due to the diverse cultures and species in the area.
Demographics
Spanning three city-states, the Mox Confederation is home to a myriad of species, races, religions, and cultures. Given its perpetual flux and expansive scope, a precise breakdown of racial and religious demographics is impossible.
Culture
Like most sovereignties and settlements in the Land of Prosperity, the Mox Confederation is largely a cultural mosaic of religions, factions, and species. Owing this multicultural confluence to Mount Mox and its Golden Arena, the confederation has drawn a multitude of cultures from across the Splinterlands. Its citizenry is an eclectic mix of nearly every race and species imaginable. This diversity stands as a testament to the confederation's open and accepting ethos.
Consequently, cultural festivals are frequent, celebrating everything from the equinoxes to racial traditions. The Arena Games are a significant part of the Confederation's culture, with prestigious tournaments and ranked battles being highly anticipated events, leading to festivities that span across weeks.
The Confederation boasts a rich collection of artistic styles borrowed from different cultures, including elven sculptures, human paintings, and dwarven metalwork. Literature and storytelling is often historical in nature or centered around the Arena Games.
Architecture is a mixture of styles that reflects the Confederation’s diversity, ranging from the high towers of Mox City to the riverside houses and estates of Meridian to the bustling docks of Port Continental.
The greatest architectural marvel in the Mox Confederation—and perhaps in all of Praetoria—is the Golden Arena. Carved into the lower slopes of Mount Mox overlooking Mox City, the grand archways of the Golden Arena lead into its vast amphitheater, which is partially covered by a stone dome to provide protection from harsh weather. Its tiered seating, also carved from the mountain’s rock, can accommodate tens of thousands of spectators, and the most famous (and infamous) battle mages have faced off on the gold-tinted sands of the arena’s floor.
The cuisine of the Confederation is just as diverse as the populace. It includes a variety of flavors from different cultures, sometimes blending together to create a rich and varied gastronomic landscape. Fresh seafood, grains, and produce are staples, while popular beverages include a variety of ales, wines, and herbal teas.
