For this week's battlemage secrets, I want to focus on Going the Distance rule set. This restricts the monster selection to only those that have ranged attacks.


Ranged monsters can be tricky since they naturally lose their ability to attack once they are placed in the front. So picking monsters with Close Range or better yet, the summoner that gives that ability, is a good strategy.

But personally, I would look at summoners that alter the ranged attack damage like Quix the Devious and Prophet Rosa, or the ones that give Return Fire. Ilthain is almost an automatic pick for me when this rule set comes up.

Shared Battle

My shared battle is a bit trickier this time. It's a 54-mana match with Rise of the Commons, Going the Distance, and Ferocity rule sets. And the only available splinters are Earth and Death. You can check the link here.

I would have chosen Fernheart but unfortunately, the only one I had rented is Thaddeus Brood. This is not an ideal pick for this matchup since the enemy is most likely not going to bring out a ranged and magic monster so a debuff on magic is useless.

And it looks like my opponent was not prepared for this rule set combination as well as he brought out a level two summoner, Octavia Shadowmeld. We both had the same idea of using Gobson Bomber as a meatshield in the front and have Gargoya Devil as the real tank just behind it. But he had a Liza Fox which can be a game-changer since she has high damage and most of my monsters can be killed in one shot.

But my worries were cleared away once I hit the battle button. I half forgot that since most ranged monsters are weaker defense-wise, it's a matter of who strikes first. And I had a Supply Runner at the very back of my lineup.

Supply Runner is a good support card to include in your lineup. It has decent range damage and it's fast. He also boosts the speed and health of all allies.

Ravenhood Warden is also a good option for Going the Distance rule sets simply because of his Protect ability that gives two armor to all allies. It also has a low cost and it can fit in most mana caps.

So those are the two main monsters that I think swayed the battle right into my favor. The match swiftly ended at round two.
