Plus or Minus depends on Ownership
My approach for this season was to aim to play just the Wild Format, which is what I have been doing, but it hasn't been easy! With the rewards so high in Champion Leagues, there are a lot of people clambering to reach it and getting streaks has been very, very, very difficult for me.
I have been near here before, and then I got pushed all the way down to nearly dropping into Gold 1, and then have had to slowly work my way up from there - again. It is frustrating, but what is good is that there is a very high incentive for people to get into Champion now, as I have seen SPS win rewards nearing 100 SPS for some people, which is around about $7 a win.
While I am struggling to get there, considering there is only five days left in the season, there is still less than 80 accounts that have made it into Champions at all, and only 64 of them are still there by points, with quite a few who have been knocked back down the rankings after moving up, with some 400 points in the negative now.
What is interesting with the high rewards in Champions, is that there is far more incentive to be there, than place there for the DEC rewards, as while first spot takes 200K DEC which is worth about $130 at the end of the season, that is around about 20 decent wins in Champions, not to mention the Focus and Chest rewards earned are of significantly higher chances of being valuable too.
Last season, which was about two weeks long, there were some accounts that earned well over $1000 in rewards, with some lucky ones getting opening some very large SPS rewards in chests. Because of this incentive in Diamond and Champions, the rental market for maxed cards is looking very healthy in comparison to what it was a month or two ago, as while there is about 10x reward in Champions, the Diamond rewards are nothing to sneeze at either. With wins getting between 2 and 5 SPS, depending on ECR - mine are the very low end, as my ECR is hovering around 50% constantly.
But, what this has changed for the rounds is that people seem to have become far more competitive for earnings, whereas before it felt that many of the top players were maximizing for position, not value. And of course, once there is value on the table, there are always going to be those who will compete the best they can for it. This is a good thing.
What will be interesting in the coming months is that LAND should be close to release and producing on it is going to soak up a lot of the cards, especially the maxed ones by quality, as it will affect production. This means that the top-end of the rental market might be thin and, the card values will likely go up too, as people look to max-out their cards to stake. This sets up a scarcity dynamic, as well as an incentive dynamic between playing and staking, which should positively affect the values, but also make it more expensive to be competitive at that top end.
This might be balanced through the rewards, but I assume the cost to earnings ratio will be narrower. But, no matter what way you look at it, it should be pretty good earnings for owners of assets, but of course this is going to be adjusted by the price paid for those assets, with those who got in early to build their stack, having a massive cost-averaging advantage.
The end of the year is going to be interesting for Splinterlands and I think it will be a good indication of what might happen in a bullrun, as if people can settle into an earnings groove now, it will likely get them pretty excited when things really get moving. Though, I am not going to predict when there would be a decent run through crypto, as there is so much going on in the total economy and we are still just getting started on the run down. However, due to the way things work these days, it might not be that long until there is a significant turnaround, though it might be more toward the end of 2023.
Update: I played a couple rounds, now I am 60 points away from Champions again...
Perhaps I am not cutout for this level of competition.
I wonder how many of those who have cards and land will decide to stop playing, if they don't have enough cards to do both? It will be interesting to see, as I know that even though I only have 10 plots, I don't have many maxed or maxable cards spare, especially summoners. So, I would have to raid my playing deck to make up for it and I am guessing I am not the only one who would have to do this.
As said, it will be interesting and in many ways, as once land finally gets released, I think that the dynamic of the playing environment is going to be heavily affected too, as so many cards are going to be shifted off the rental markets with a lot of key cards being completely unavailable most of the time. This scarcity will change-up the dynamics a lot, as people will have to adjust their gameplay to suit.
After piling so much into the game over the last year and a bit I have been involved, I am of course hoping that at some point, the ROI will be in the positive. How long I will have to wait or if that will ever happen is still to be seen. At least though, there is a chance and, it isn't just hoping for a market pump and dump, which means that there is a chance that once it goes up, it will stay up higher than the averages, falling back less through the bear cycles. Though, this is very much speculation -
Like it always is.
In the short-term though, there are five days left of my experiment of aiming for Wild only, so let's see what that yields in comparison to last season.
As soon as my ECR recovers a bit.

In WILD format, Champions are getting insane rewards compared to the Champions in MODERN, I think you should enter into Champions if your RANKING stability is not maintained properly as still we have more 5 days till the end of the season.
!PIZZA
I am trying to get there - keep getting bounced at the door! :D
Best of LUCK!

Even though potentially my cards are better in Modern, mentally I havent been able to step out of Wild already, but this is a bit because we are used to playing with certain cards. The human (me in this case) is lazy and not so competent in adjusting into changes hahaha.
In general I am curious what will happen when land is there. In terms of the rental market, but also in terms of how we play the game. When I look at the interface of the land play...we shall see!
I struggle in Modern too - though I think it is easier to get wins there overall. Habit is a huge problem! :D
I also think that Wild is a bit more fun, as there is more potential variation. Is that part of it for you too?
I haven't had a good look at what has been announced at Splinterfest, but by the looks of the maps and interface I have seen, it isn't "that far" away.
Well i try to integrate some of the new cards in my game but cant make a nice entire levelled up deck with it. It just isnt that balanced (as yet but dont think it ever will be honestly)
I think if I would level up the modern cards and have a bit of the goods in there I could make it work for some decent rewards, but I like the old ones in there..and yeah, that is because of the habit hahah
True i think new stuff is just around the corner and this will be a matter of q4
I managed to get a full deck of RW, but I am struggling to find a groove with them - I am getting cleaned up by others though!
Q4 will be interesting - would be very interesting if there is a sudden reversal in the crypto markets - but I am not expecting that :)
Haha cleaned up. I really do like the RW cards though with the high level mana blasts. You maxed it all also?
Nehh not expecting reversal here any time soon. Only doom soon if we see the vibe of Elon
well if you keep at it and try your best to play you will certainly make it up there
I'll make it - but I also want to actually play there a bit :)
I also only play Wild.
Damn I wish I could play in champion league...but I am struggling in gold.
Are you willing to rent up? That is what it takes to get there I think. I have to rent about 25 cards, but probably need about 40 to be more competitive.
At the moment that is not an option for me.
I hope this happens. Maybe with some good players gone playing would be a bit easier...
It will make it easier in one respect, but it will also affect the rental markets quite heavily, so it is a double-edged sword.
Hmm, pretty sensible thoughts on land and card rentals. All I know is that the creators like to break these calculations if not immediately, then after the first season. 😅 But I still buy the cards and wait for the launch of the lands!
It has been about three years for Land now? :D
😅 !LOLZ It's possible! I've been waiting a little less, a year and a half. 😂

Indeed there are cycles to these things and as they go through the process, it may teaches us patience and tests our endurance. In the end we know it is worth it.
If this does amount to something, I will be over the moon.
Gold is the most challenging. Diamond is a breeze. Then Champion is brutal again.
Gold doesn't seem to bother me much, though I don't like playing without the full set of attributes. Getting into C3 sucks...
For Land, depending on how the staking requirements are, there might be an opportunity to play to 50% ECR or less, staking your cards on Land till you are close to 100%. Rinse & repeat.
When land comes, it will definitely throw another spanner in the works with cards, especially summoners. Maybe its time for you to take up the Splinterfest Kraken offer of $100k packs....!lolz

Land is such an unknown as to how it will affect, but I definitely think that summoners are going to be in short supply - even the crappy ones :)
:D :D
For me, the wild format is enough for playing in.
Also, playing in the gold league is a real struggle.
I have never past diamond III ever, but I hope I can in the future.
Keep grinding @tarazkp bro and I'm sure you'll get into champion III by the season-ending.
I wish you luck.
Getting into Diamond is one thing, staying there another. There is quite a difference between playing gold level cards and then against diamond level with gold cards.
Absolutely, I agree with you 100%. Staying in the higher league is a real challenge.
I only just broke back into Diamond, and I'm sailing up. Gold was brutal.
I'll be retiring almost entirely from battling when land rolls out proper. I'll probably keep a toe in with a silver modern deck; mostly just to keep the scrolls coming in for our guild.
I'll probably still have to rent out a region, and use the income to buy more cards.
Supply crunch incoming.
Missing buffs sucks ass.
I think there are a few with a lot of cards that will do similar and retire or partially retire from playing. Will you have cards left to rent, or will your land holdings soak up everything you have?
If land gets released soon, I suspect CL and the rest of RW will sell through fast.
I'm thinking I'll pull everything off of fivesecondrule and just focus on land.
I'll have to keep some aside for TD, too. Keen to hit that hard.
@tarazkp How do you know the numbers in Champion? Is it through the leaderboard on the site? Some nice rewards being divvied out alright. Wouldn't wonder why the rental market is flying.
I have seen some screen shots of individuals, but you can also search for them via the game. For some results, I had a look at https://splex.gg/ in the tools and tapped in the names of some of the people in the leaderboard.
Cheers thanks
No worries mate.
I am pretty late into the game and is struggling with Wild as I do not own any of those cards :(
Since joining the game early this year, I have seen so many updates/changes in Splinterland! Modern was definitely a lifesaver for me as I do not require a high CP to compete in the Gold league and would probably be competing there for the time being, at least until I have more funds to rent better cards to compete in Diamond :D So in love with this game and is very excited for its future after catching a glimpse of it through Splinterfest!
It is great that there are both formats now. I have been playing under 1.5 years, but the investment to compete in wild is pretty insane. Renting is always an option though and I rent a fair bit :)
Yeah renting is definitely an option and I'm just saving up enough to sustain those rents once I decide to move up! Haven't invested much into the game and is just growing them organically through flipping of cards in the market and playing via those scholarship programs offered. Albeit slower than others, I just want to enjoy the game at my own pace and not be too absorbed into chasing the $$$ :D
