Summer Reflection #20: Any Blacker

avatar

Something different has come up today on short notice, and it is something that I have never done before, so I am a bit nervous, even though there is "no pressure" involved. A friend of ours has asked if I am willing to take some pictures of her, which isn't the problem. The problem is that it is shooting in some kind of theatre, in a completely dark and black environment.

And I have no idea how to.

I am going to try anyway.

The friend has been battling cancer for the last 12 years or so, and while she is far from out of the woods, she is putting together some kind of video for survivors and those facing a future of uncertainty. As an afterthought, she figured that I might be interested in taking some pictures as well throughout some of the process.

Sounds like fun?

Yeah it does, but I am not a great photographer and I definitely don't have the equipment that is suitable for this kind of shoot. I have an off-camera flash, but it is a fill flash, not directed, which means that I might not be able to get the definition required in such a dark environment - but I don't really know, because as said, I have never done it before.

I found out about this last night.

It is in a couple hours from now, so after I have finished writing this vacation reflection, I will spend a bit of time looking at some example images and seeing if I can work out a way to replicate it. The friend sent one image as inspiration - and it looks to be taken by someone who has years of experience. But you know, no pressure.

But, since I am trying to push myself a little more and just try stuff that I haven't done before, I think that this is a decent opportunity to possibly improve in something I like to do. Or, it is an opportunity to find out how large the gaps really are in this particular area. I am assuming quite large, but I am hoping that I am able to get something that is good enough that it is possible to "fix" it a bit in post-processing. It is not the way I like to do things, but perhaps I might be able to get a couple shots that she can use either for her film project, or as a memory.

Smallsteps and my wife are going to come with me also to this, so I hope I am able to get a couple photos of them together also, because I think it would be nice to have something in black and white on the wall that looks like a professional took them. The only problem with that part is of course the "professional" aspect of it :)

Time to do some research.

Dear @tarazkp !
I wonder if you think you are healthier compared to her!

I hope you are not offended by my awkward English!😂

It is hard to compare, as we both have quite different symptoms and affects.

That must feel like a daunting task. I totally understand what you mean about the uncertainty. It's interesting how others seem to have more confidence in us than we do in ourselves sometimes. I remember a long time ago I was asked to record the video of a friends wedding. I had it all set up and everything was great. Then I get home and the video looks fantastic, but there was zero sound! I don't think I have ever fully recovered from that. You will do great though! :)

I just feel it is out of courtesy, or they ask me not expecting to get good results anyway :D

I have heard some horror stories from weddings, where things like corrupt cards have meant all the photos were lost. scary!

Yes, I guess that could be true!

I'm not a photography scholar either, but when I've taken photos in low light environments I use the ‘white balance’ technique, it's an ally in low light situations, as you get the best out of each lighting according to the scene you're in. You can do white balance automatically or semi-automatically, with an ISO 800 setting. But of course it depends on the equipment you have, I have a Panasonic Lumix GH5 II. I'd love to see your girls photographed in these environments. Best of luck.

These were destined for black and white, so white balance wasn't that necessary for it.

I think you would need a reflector and a dark cloth behind the poser.

Yes. An umbrella would have been good for the flash - I don't have one :)

It's a great opportunity to try out some new skills. You really are a very good photographer judging by the pics you post here. They look professional to me. Granted, I'm no judge as I only take Phonos (pics with my phone) lol. Your ladies make for good subject matter and you always show them in the most flattering ways. I hope you get some great photos for your friend...it is a worthy endeavor

"phonos" - I haven't heard that before!

It was fun to do at least - took some time for photos and then to select and edit - but hopefully something she likes :)

You have made a very good decision for saying that Smallsteps and your wife will follow you. Also, it’s a good thing that you have accepted the proposal from your friend which is a way to make her happy
I hope you take the pictures well

I was definitely out of my league on these ones. It would be great to practice more though :)

The friend has been battling cancer for the last 12 years or so.

That is impressive. I don't think that I could last so long. some people are just born to be fighters.

Wow, literally almost not time to prepare. It's for a good cause, so I hope you do great; but no pressure though. Good thing the internet has a lot of resources available. I hope you'll post some of the photos.

How did it turn out? I still get scolded for taking medium festival photos at best.
