Mastering the Art of Return Fire: Tactics for Domination in Splinterlands Battle

In my years of playing the Splinterlands game, battles with higher manna caps are harder to win, maybe because I do not have many sophisticated cards across several splinter categories especially when rulesets are involved. When I drew this battle, I already conceded a defeated in my heart because the manna cap was high - 50 and I'm not used to the "Fire and Regret" battle ruleset.

Fire and Regret battle ruleset provides that all units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle. Enemy units that attack with ranged attacks receive damage back. The damage done by the return fire ability is equal to the damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up. However, ranged attack units with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks. Also, the Amplify ability increases damage. This battle ruleset encourages body-to-body combat rather than using weapons from afar.

In a real-time war situation, the "Return fire" situation typically refers to the ability of a soldier or combatant to shoot back at an enemy who has fired upon them. It's a fundamental aspect of combat training and tactics, aimed at both self-defense and neutralizing threats. It is a defensive tactic used in combat situations where an individual or a group responds to enemy fire with their own gunfire.

This ability is a crucial skill taught in military training to maintain fire superiority and suppress enemy positions. Soldiers are trained to quickly locate the source of enemy fire and engage them, either to neutralize the threat or to create cover for themselves and their comrades to maneuver or seek better positions. This ability requires not only marksmanship but also situational awareness and quick decision-making under intense pressure.

My team's position in the game's ranking was a dilemma. Giving up the battle meant I was going down the league ranking hence, would lose Glint rewards. I gathered courage to select my best cards for the fight. Grund (10), mad Ogre Anarcist (6), Mycelic Slipspawn (9), Venari Knifer (6), Goblin Psychic (6), and Regal Peryton (5) were summoned by Underboss Fabino summoner. My choice of this summoner was to boost the attack of my team in case the return fire ruleset doesn't favour us.

Positioning Grund to lead the battle was due to its double strike ability. Incidentally, the enemy team fielded two monsters with double attack abilities too. The first round would have 26 turns of attacks. Both teams stood strong to the need of the first round.

by round 2, the enemy team started losing monster units despite their huge stats. Grund made the super attacks being inspired by the summoner to damage targets by -5. It is worthy of recognition that Goblin Psychic was the big engine room that gave sufficient support to the lead monster- grund.

The battle lasted for just three rounds. That was faster than expected. We won the battle with four monster units still alive in the battlefield.

My experience in the battle hints that good weapons are not all that guarantee success in a fight. There are times when sophisticated weapons can become a distraction if they cannot be utilized effectively or detonated by the enemy. One may become ensnared by his/her weapons when they are not put to use as appropriate.

Have you played a Splinterlands Battle with a "Fire and Regret" ruleset? What was your winning strategy?
