Community Engagement Challenge: Scholarships Best Practice
Prelude
Hi all, good day to all of you. It's time again for Community Engagement Challenge. The last one I did was on tournaments and now the topic for this week is on Scholarships Best Practice. To be honest it has been a while since I heard about this word. But's let look more into this topic into today's post.
Scholarships
If I didn't recall wrongly, this term was commonly used during the early days of Axie Infinity.
The rise of scholarship was due to the earning capability of play2earn games where the earnings can actually replace the daily salary of some developing countries.
This led to a situation whereby managers whom are slightly well off but lack of time to play games vs scholars whom have time but cannot afford game assets. When a profit sharing terms (common profit sharing ratios are 50:50, 60:40, 40:60) is being negotiated and agreed upon, a scholar-manager relationship pair is being established.
This interesting relationship gave rise to an era of scholar-manager relationships. However, there were many different outcomes to every scholar-manager relationship. Some went well, some don't. Many of the soured relationships were due to disagreement and also either side not honouring their side of the pie.
Manager's Side of The Pie - Be A Good Manager
In order to be a good manager, a few things needs to be established.
- Putting up a clear terms and conditions, stating clearly the profit share, expectations, method of payment, agreed date of payment and other terms.
This will allow the scholar to be able to know the boundary conditions and what expect when onboarding as a scholar. This will also avoid awkward situations where terms are not followed and being denied by either party.
- Give reasonable terms and do not exploit the scholar
The scholars are human beings and do have their own lives. They are not bots or machines that can use your NFT to play all day. Also for profit sharing portion, make sure the scholar gets substantial benefit rather than having to grind for you for long hours but being paid peanuts.
- Honour your terms
While the NFTs are owned by you but being delegated to your scholars, don't be a twerp and un-delegate prematurely or without prior notice if there needs to changes or scholars did not do as per stated in the terms. But before going down that route, check in with your scholar and verify the situation before doing drastic actions. Life events can hit people unexpectedly so give some grace and understand first.
- Regular check ins with your scholars
This is key to a good working relationship. Your scholars are not your dogs. Just because you delegate your NFTs to them, doesn't mean everything else will come naturally. It is through close communication to better things on both side and help achieve even greater goals together.
Scholars Side of The Pie - Be a responsible scholar
- Be clear what you are signing up for
It is your responsibility to be clear of the terms laid down by the manager. Any unclear terms should be clarified and a new document with the clarified terms should be drafted and kept by both the manager and the scholar
- Game Mastery
A manager would not want a scholar that do not utilize the delegated card well and perpetually losing games. So continue to better yourself in Splinterlands, learn about new card releases, card synergies, strategies, top tier gameplay, ruleset mastery and predicting how your opponents will play against you.
- Communicate early if any items in terms and conditions did not meet
Bad news is always better than late news. If some life event crop up or some hiccup happen that cause you to play less or even have difficulty playing, communicate to your manager early to prevent any form of misunderstanding when it comes to profit calculation or doubts on commitment level reduction.
- Similarly, check in regularly with your managers
Communication and giving regular updates will set your managers at ease instead of guessing if you will eat up their money. Share with them the latest game development, strategies and if there are things lacking that you need additional support. By maintaining an open communication, it is easier to talk things through and resolve any form of misunderstandings should it arises.
Rule of Thumb to Maintain Good Manager-Scholar Relationship
It takes both hands to clap in such a relationship. And a good relationship is built on trust. When trust is absent, misunderstanding happens and suspicion will linger. The key is to build the relationship and not try to hide anything from one another. Deviations or any unclear situations should always be brought into check ins for discussion. And most importantly, treat each other with respect, no one is higher than anyone else.
Wrap Up
I am not sure if there are still such scholarship ongoing but I strongly believe as long as we built up the relationship with trust, both parties stand to benefit from this arrangement. Managers, support your scholars! Scholar, make your manager's NFTs proud!
