Reflections on Discipline: The Role of Caning in Schools

Greetings and welcome to my blog, this is my first time posting here, hope I didn't break any rules.

I remember when I was still in school, our teachers usually cane us for being naughty, not doing assignments, making noise and the likes. I was part of people that received cane but I never received cane for not doing my assignments, my books were top priority then.

There was this teacher that took us basic science and technology then, the man was really strict and always flogging us even if we didn't make noise in his class, he just enjoys flogging us and he didn't flog with just cane there a razor blade attached to the tip of the cane and whenever he flogs someone the person bleeds. One day after his class, we couldn't take it anymore we went to meet our proprietor( he was sometimes in school). We reported the man and when he was asked, he denied it we kept insisting that he uses cane with blade at the tip to flog and the proprietor went someone to his office to check and saw the cane we talked about. The man was dealt with and we were happy that he wasn't teaching us again.

Some schools today, go with the no-cane policy and I am not really a fan of no-cane. Children can be funny and at the same time frustrating, at times punishment will do nothing to the children so using cane will be the only solution. I'm a teacher by profession and I've taught in different schools and seen different children, both the good, the bad and the ugly. For the past few weeks and days at my place of work, the children have really been naughty and I don't want to flog them but they sometimes push me. When they make a hell lot of noise and warning them isn't enough, I result to using cane and after giving them at least three strokes they keep quiet for the rest of the day.

I personally can't teach in a no-cane policy school because sometimes the only thing children hear and listen to is cane. I believe it is important for educators, policymakers, parents, and students to engage in open and respectful dialogue about discipline in schools and work together to create safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments for all children. Also the decision to adopt a no-cane policy or bring back the cane into schools should be guided by research.
