Here is a quick look into Hivemind enabled on beta.steemit.com . If you don't really know what hivemind community is, check out this post on the interview.

I would think that this is a great update on Steemit and it does introduce a consolidated post approach to individual communities. Its more like the subreddit features but the biggest difference is that this is powered by the Steem blockchain.

If I create a community now in beta mode will it still be valid once communities are officially launched or is this just a test mode scenario right now?

With the low price of 3 Steem are you concerned about name squatting?
