Community Poll: Should Splinterlands run Ads?

This Community Poll is in reference to my previous post detailing how Splinterlands could choose to run ads on its website to generate ad revenue.

Not that this is NOT a DAO proposal, because the final decision on whether or not to do this is ENTIRELY up to the Splinterlands team. It is simply a community poll to give data & feedback to the Splinterlands team, should they consider implementing ads.

Should Splinterlands run Ads?

  • Yes, run ads: This means you are in favor of the Splinterlands team implementing Ads on the site, with the understanding that they would try to maximize revenue while minimizing impact on user experience.

  • No, don't run ads: This means you are NOT in favor of the Splinterlands team implementing ads on the website.

Note that even if there's an overwhelming YES, it doesn't mean the company MUST do this. Similarly, an overwhelming NO does not prohibit the company from implementing ads. Again: this is just data they can use to help inform a decision.

I think we need to carefully consider the technical implementation if we decide to go down the ads route. Personally, i don’t think using default Google Ads is the right path. While it's a simple implementation, we would have no control over what ads are displayed, and the revenue from Google AdSense isn’t that high.

If we really want to pursue something like this, it should be done in a more controlled manner. One idea could be to create a dedicated subsite where people can buy ad space to run their ads on Splinterlands. The ad would be displayed in the selected area for the amount of time paid for, but there would be a mechanism for SPS stakeholders to veto an ad if necessary—say if 50 million SPS vote against it, the ad is not displayed. This way, we could avoid ads that might be illegal or harmful to the community.

Such a controlled system would give us more oversight and potentially better revenue. The real question is who would be interested in buying up that space and if there's sufficient demand. I remember the InLeo team also attempted something similar, but they didn't get the right CPM from Google, and it didn't turn out to be a good idea. So we should learn from that experience and plan accordingly.

Another great idea. I think a lot of crypto companies would pay for access to our user base.

I think all hive front ends should be running ads. Every bit of revenue helps.

Peakd can use ads to buy back and burn hive

Absolutely. That's one option. Or buy back and distribute to HP holders. Or build a marketing fund, run contests, pay for devs.

All revenue helps the site and the eco-system. It's crazy that they don't do it.

I also discussed other options in depth time to time. In future I might have to make my own utopia I want. Usually when others are not doing it, we might have to do it ourselves.

If they think we authors a greedy,
Then simply not give us. Use this money to burn hive.

Or if they think it's annoying, then buy monthly ads free access and your that money have sustainable buy backs.

If authors don't get anything, that's fine. Atleast control hive inflation.
Maybe just enable ads when people r not logged into hive.

Soo many ways. Everything will have pros and cons. We have to think upside the box to control inflation.

Definitely! Hive and SPS are a really small ecosystem compared to BTC, ETH, SOL and other chains. Ads might be about survival at some point...

It really shouldn't be about survival. It should be about progression.

Start making this money before we have to do it. Add value to all of these tokens and boost the whole eco-system.

Start pushing the prices up legitimately.

Use Ads plugin to insert into any web page or google app.
Let SPL start earning advertising revenue.
This also applies to Peakmonster.
I think it's a great idea.

I have consulted my bot and he has informed me that he would not mind watching ads.

Yes, though an opt-in or opt-out system with rewards or pay would be nice with it :).

Love the idea but Matt seems to have shut it down already.

Really? I still have to go listen to the DAOnhall, haven't had a chance to yet. Guess he talked about it there?

I'm down with that idea. Then people could opt in to help the company prosper and get a little reward themselves.

  1. people can opt out with a small fee.
(Or no fee, depends on testing waters.)

  2. People can opt in and will be paid a certain percentage of ads money in
    In-game currency like dec.

  3. ads can we used to buy back cards and burn them.

  4. not all ads needs to be banner ads. Moba games used skins as ads. We can sell skins too with something that gives revenue aside from skin sales.

  5. a certain percentage of ad money can be used to buy back and burn hive.

All points are stand alone thoughts.

Test waters and do what's good for hive and splinterlands.

What is the cost to return, who runs the ads do you not need an add dept in splinterlands to organize cost effective add space. Same with putting ads out you need someone dealing with this then there is dev time to implement. just a thought.

I've done this before and you can put a range of effort into it, from nearly zero to a lot. With little dev effort and zero BD effort you can place ads from ad exchange aggregators and they source ads automatically. That won't be the best revenue per impression but it's easy to get going and low-to-zero maintenance. On the higher side you can of course have a dedicated BD team sourcing 1st party ads, which are likely more native and higher RPM, but that of course requires much more effort.

I also have same thought. It can add some ads block in the UI and earn something from it.
Other platforms also can do it.
I like the idea of buying back and burning some Hive from ads revenue

not enough of a player base to make significant rewards from advertising. this would be a better idea when lots of players are coming in and joining

I'm for non-intrusive ads, such as on the "waiting" screen for battles and such. I think there's two ways to potentially make this even better though:

  • Opt out of ads for a (monthly?) burn. Could be rolled into some sort of "pass" as well. For example, $10 a month gives a glint boost, some temporary title ("the Supportive" or whatever I don't care about the specifics), and no ads.

  • No ads for people staking over x amount of SPS. (I think the fee model would be better, but I could see this as a way to boost staking incentives.)

Love this. Would require a bit more work, but it's definitely a good idea. And I can say with absolute certainty the revenue per user is higher if users pay even just couple bucks for the no-ad experience, so this could likely be cheap and still pull in more revenue than the ads themselves for those users who prefer this.

If there are just some ads that don't interrupt playing, I'm fine with that - I'll just block them anyway.
If there are adds that interrupt gameplay in any form I'll stop interacting with Splinterlands in an instant.

Voted no for now...

If i understood correctly in de SPS DAO meeting according to matt.
The traffic number are not enough to have a impact, you needs much more traffic on your website to have some relevant income.

Also as player i do not like adds.

That said, if the company is behind this and its beneficial i will support this 😁.

Supporting this too but I don't think it will even pay a 10% of the salary of one person. Not sure if its worth it to reduce user experience for hardly any profit.

IF it works for inLeo, it could work for Splinterlands. Hopefully, we can find something on Hive to promote so it's a win/win situation for all parties involved.

After reading many of the responses I must agree:

  1. Controlled Ads on Loading Screen or something similar
  2. Pay to Gordon Ramsay those ads
    untitled.gif
  3. Carefully curate the ads for mutual benefit
