Electric Feels - Splinterlands Share Your Battle Challenge

The card featured in this week's @splinterlands Share Your Battle Challenge a fairly simple card to use, and very utilitarian as a secondary tank. At higher levels it also does well with damage assist. But I play in Bronze League, with lower level cards, so that's mostly what we'll be talking about in this post. Today, we're going to reach out and touch someone with Electric Eels.

The Electric Eels is a rare Water Splinter monster from the Promo edition. It starts at Level 1 with 5 health, 3 speed, and 1 melee damage for 4 mana. At Level 1 it has the Reach ability, allowing it to make a melee attack from the second position, making it a fair secondary melee tank. At Level 5 it gains the Blast ability, allowing it to also damage adjacent monsters to the target opponent monster. Blast is one of my favorite abilities in the game.

While Water Splinter is arguably one of the strongest splinters in the game, I don't usually play it unless it's for a daily quest. And when I do, I tend to try to rely on magic attacks. So I was a little worried I'd have a hard time using this card. To use it well at low levels would imply 2 melee tanks. And finding cards in my collection to synergize with that seemed tough at first since I would like to focus on magic.

I had a couple of matches where I struggled using this card, and a couple where it did well. Let's talk about one of those matches where it did well.

Let's Talk About The Battle

The Ruleset for this battle was normal rules, with all splinters available and 20 mana. So, lots of options.

My Strategy

For my summoner, I chose Alric Stormbringer to give all of my magic attackers +1 attack. My intention was to have the Electic Eels and another cheap-ish tank protecting as many magic attackers as I could field with the remaining mana and then just focus on beating up the opponent's first position. I wasn't worried about fancy back row attacks or anything. Just an all out assault on one monster at a time.

My first position monster was Serpent of Eld. At 7 mana it was a little more than I was truly intending for the first of two tanks, but with it's modest speed and fair melee attack, I figured it fit with the over all plan of "Beat up the first monster in line." The fact that it has dodge only helped to protect my own back row even more. This worked out well.

Next up was Electric Eels. They did their job here well, whittling away at the first monster little by little and being there if needed to protect my attackers. Speaking of attack...

Ice Pixie and Medusa were up next. Both had 2 magic attack thanks to the Alric buff, so were able to do 4 magic damage per turn together. Pixie was first, since she has flying and would be harder to hit if the tanks fell. Medusa came later with slightly more health in case there were attacks to the back that got past the sacrificial chicken.

Speaking of chicken... What would a Splinterlands game be without a Furious Chicken to soak some damage? I stuck it in the back to deal with any opponents using sneak.

Did It Work?

My opponent chose Drake of Arnok for their summoner. Fortunately the +1 Armor he grants didn't really impact my magic damage focused strategy.

My opponent had **Frozen Soldier as their tank. A solid choice (get it? Solid? Frozen? I'll see myself out now.) With the Shield ability and the extra armor from Arnok, Frozen Soldier could've been a lot more of a problem. Fortunately it's actual health isn't significant, and the magic attackers made short work of it.

The opponent followed Frozen Soldier with some ranged attackers, Sniping Narwhal and Water Elemental One by one, the advanced to the first position to take the place of the fallen Frozen Soldier, rendering their attacks useless. With 4 health each, the magic attackers were able to take care of them one by one, turn by turn.

All in all, not the most exciting battle, but the strategy worked. Fair 2 tank protection and a focused magic attack.

Reflections

At lower levels, I generally have better options for a secondary tank in two tank teams. But for 4 mana, the Electric Eels aren't a terrible choice. I imagine I'll be using this card much more often once I am playing in higher level tiers with higher level cards since I love the Blast ability. Still, a good card all in all to have handy.
