Double the Wasted Mana

In order to improve the relationship between Splinterlands and Hive, in the last week, the @sps.dao has performed one of the the largest HIVE powerups in recent history, putting about a million into their account. This was bought off the market directly also, which was an interesting process in and of itself, from what I have heard.

But there is a sizeable problem.

image.png

Can you guess?

image.png

The @sps.dao account is on the curation trail of the @steemmonsters account and between them, they have about 2.5 million HIVE POWER, which translates at the current value of HIVE at 16 cents, into a $21 vote. That is a pretty hefty draw on the distribution pool, but as you can see, the voting (at time I snapshot the pictures) mana is sitting at 100%.

Do you know why?

I think the answer is pretty easy really, and I have mentioned it several times before. In order for those accounts to vote, there has to be content and let's face it, when it comes down to curating the Splinterlands content community,

There is not much good Splinterlands content.

Are you offended?

Now, "good" is subjective. I get that, but as I scroll through the Splinterlands community on Hive, much of it just looks the same, nothing really stands out and for many, many of the posts, they appear to be formatted, scripted, low-effort repeatable. This doesn't make them valueless per se, but where is the differentiation,

The competitive advantage?

So, let's think a little bit about what kinds of advantages there might be in content creation. Firstly, if all the titles and cover images look the same, what is there to attract the audience in? And then, if it is just another daily, weekly, or season report challenge or whatever, where is the value for me as an individual member of the audience? The worst ones are the opening of packs - what the hell do I get out of that?

I don't think this is the main issue of the content.

I think that the main issue is that the majority of Splinterlands content has close to zero personality in it. And I think that part of the reason for this is that so much of it is formula based, quick to create, standardized. It is liking playing the standard, most obvious lineup in a battle, and expecting to win against someone who knows you are going to play that lineup.

Let's Battle

I don't create a lot of Splinterlands content, but when I do, I generally look at it from the perspective of the community development, as I think it is incredibly important. The game itself is the focus topic, but it is very different to one of the games where players don't actually own anything. Playing Splinterlands means being an owner and those who own should be looking to increase the value of what they own, not just what they earn. For a game that has no marketing but benefits from more players coming in to buy and play, the player-owners are an important part of the process.

I think that while there might be some great players of Splinterlands, I think that great personalities of Splinterlands should also be highlighted and leveraged by the game and the community. There might be overlap between these two groups, but not necessarily. Whoever they are though, it is probably in Splinterlands best interest to support content of those whose content supports the game and makes the community surrounding the game, more attractive for players and newbies alike. Where are the personalities?

Be visible

Don't hide away. Discord is not attractive. While there are people who will hang out there and argue about every little bit of the game and every decision made, it isn't enough for the community to thrive. There needs to be more effort put into building a face of Splinterlands, and not just the game face either, though it might be worth using the UI as a highlighting mechanism.

For instance,

image.png

I play modern, so I wouldn't mind seeing some handpicked content that would help improve my gameplay. Similarly, I have invested a fair bit into both Splinterlands and Hive, so I would like to see some content that supports that also.

Splinterlands has lots of little "games within games" in its economy, and one of those should be the Hive side of it too. The Splinterlands team alone has about 200 dollars (at current value of HIVE) to distribute a day that can support it. Look at all the other accounts that are also invested in both arenas, and there is a fair amount of possible value to capture, whilst also helping to build the community. Players looking to earn should be interested in creating content also, because for many, they would actually earn more through content creation than the game, and they are already set up for it, with a Hive account ready to go.

But, all of this aside, I believe that the main reason for creating Splinterlands content on Hive should be, that it helps a player be more engaged and likely, improve their understanding of the game ecosystem, from how to play, to the tokenomics and governance factors involved. It helps build a far more rounded knowledge base and when opportunities do arise, whether they be for financial or tactical gain, it is easier to take advantage early.

Value comes in many forms.

Are you able to compete for the content value available?

PlayToEarn

User-generated content is great for the game.

What are your thoughts on this?

By this observation, there might be a revolution in the Splinterlands Community 😂🤣

Well, we are short staffed, and also low on funds, so I will be skeptical on dev time at least in 2024. However, if our finances improve, I think the in-game integration of blog post is a great idea. It helps both hive and splinterlands.

In the meantime, if we all encorage people with 2 items:

  • Write quality SL related posts (please get away from template writing for a 'contest')
  • Introduce hive blogging to as many as you can

I think that will help our joint cause.

These are definitely good places to start.

Taraz this is brilliant. Integrating a Hive blog feed into the battle overview page is such a rad idea.

Perhaps a bit too ambitious, an even bigger idea - I wonder if it can custom curate to styles of play, where abilities played (or a lack of abilities played) can be associated with rulesets, mana cap windows, etc... (maybe through built-in hashtags on each platform?) and suggest gameplay improvements through some of the writings of the SPL community on Hive.

That said, any iteration of this would be awesome. The real estate is there in-game, the content is there on Hive. Marry the two.

Well done - I hope to see something along these lines happen!

Throwin a dart here!

As an aside, and on a related note, would you be keen to hop onto an episode of TPG with us, @tarazkp? Would love to hear your story, more of your thoughts & share it all with the community

Cheers!

Not too ambitious, if you consider that with the right tags, an AI can do a lot of the sorting of the content.

the posts, they appear to be formatted, scripted, low-effort repeatable.

I am guilty of this. I don't remember the last time I changed my splinterlands post formula. They all have Battle details, Battle Ruleset, Discussing My Lineup, My Strategy and Analysis of The Battle. I enjoy my let's plays more because they tell a continuing stories and have awesome, deep characters. So I quite often write hundreds of words in my let's plays. Far more than I write for splinterlands. But that would not really work with splinterlands post. There is no story to splinterlands battle. So I am not sure how I could change this.

The art side of that community is really good from what I've seen. I don't play the game but I might get into it at some point, but I manage to see some of the art people create around it posted to Hive. Fan art, that is.

There is some good stuff, and then there is also the AI generated content. I don't count that very high on the skill chart - it is like using a bot to play the game.

Agreed. Not a fan of AI anything at all (when it comes to supposed artistic creations).

oh guilty - that weekly battle mage challenge is a day off! However the idea of that is to share it and get eyes on!

I think it's been replaced with a card review challenge, which at least one person has interpreted as 'cut and paste' 10 copies of the card at different levels and describe how the stats change.

It's genius, I mean taking something I can see and understand instantly at a glance in one picture and making it less accessible, not sure that's what they had in mind!

But I know what you mean it's an opportunity for some people to write content! And nice idea about the integration too.

It's just so frighteningly expensive to play these days. I mean $200 per card (you know, the DECENT ones and there's a fair few of 'em) is crazy.

Completely agree how there is a lack of quality content in the Splinterlands community. Many only made post that are guaranteed to get votes under the Splinterlands contest and many does not even bother creating their own thumbnail. I also enter those contest but makes my own thumbnail, dividers and footers and make my post a little different from others to show some individuality so when I see post that doesn't even bother on creating their own thumbnail, I refrain to reading them. Also the community engagement was quite lacking with some that does not even bother to reply in the comments in their post.

I thought they weren't going to vote on anything and just leave it powered up as a show of good faith or something like that. It does seem like a waste, but I like that idea better than voting low value scripted content. I personally don't see how some of the battle of the week posts are any different than an Actifit post. It's all kind of trash in my mind. I don't typically do much Splinterlands content, but I have in the past. Given the possibility of an upvote will I probably try to do a post in the future? Sure. Will it be a regular thing though? Probably not.

Me either. I think they should use the power to upvote content that helps the game and the community, rather than just to burn it for curation.

Given the possibility of an upvote will I probably try to do a post in the future?

I think you should. Regular or not, it helps to have people who are interested in more than just maximizing their game earnings.

Every game built on Hive already has access to a forum much like what Valve's Steam has (which is a place where millions gather daily). So yeah, tie these things together.

The personalities can earn rewards. The posts can earn rewards. The responses can earn rewards. Questions can earn rewards. Answers can earn rewards. But only if the people get their asses in here and the creators give them a reason to look. Gamers with HP are rewarded for simply "liking" posts and comments. And yes, having a vibrant, active and engaged community makes the product itself far more appealing.

One of the best and easiest ways to check if a game is worth your money is to visit the forum on Steam. If it's a barren wasteland. That game sucks.

Any gaming community could be here. We have "The Gaming Community" but not "Insert game name here" community. That's so weird.

And of course those pack opening posts and whatever other blandness coming out of that crowd is useless. That's like writing a post for every time you made Mario jump.

And if Splinterlands community members who own HP simply automate all votes and walk away, you've killed your chances of having an active, engaged, and rewarding community outsiders might want to join.
