Splinterlands DEC-SWAP.HIVE Liquidity Pool: Impermanent Loss, Profit and ROI Calculation after 23 days
I am an active player on several blockchain-based games but Splinterlands, after more than three years since I joined, is still my favorite blockchain-based game.
Besides the playful part related to the game dynamics, Splinterlands also offers so many investment possibilities because it has so many assets (NFTs and tokens) that you can buy, stake or sell.
One of the possibilities that Splinterlands offers its players/investors is the possibility of adding liquidity to one of the 8 liquidity pools that are viewable within the Dashboards-->Pools section of the Splinterlands site.
In the following image you can see all the Splinterlands Pools to which liquidity can be added.
I chose to add liquidity to the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool which currently has an **estimated APR of 61.24% and the reward for liquidity providers is a certain amount of DEC tokens.
I showed all the steps to be performed to add and remove liquidity from a liquidity pool and explained the reasons and evaluations of my choice to add liquidity to the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool in the post I published 20 days ago, which I invite you to read if you are not familiar with the mechanisms that govern a liquidity pool and if you are not familiar with the risks associated with an investment in a liquidity pool (post at the following link).

In today's post I want to make a financial evaluation of my investment in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool after 23 days since I added liquidity.
DEC-SWAP.HIVE: Financial Evaluation after 23 days
Impermanent Loss, Profit and ROI Calculation
I had already participated in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool during the SPS token airdrop but on September 2, 2022 I decided to participate again and added more liquidity than before:
- 500000 tokens DEC
- 633.84769634 SWAP.HIVE
The first risk factor to consider and evaluate when investing in a liquidity pool is the impermanent loss.
Calculating the impermanent loss provides the answer to the following question:
Would I have been better off keeping the tokens liquid (Hodling) or would I have been better off investing them in a pool?
The impermanent loss is a loss that is realized:
- only when removing liquidity from a pool.
- only if there has been a change in the value of the tokens put in as liquidity into the pool in the time interval between adding liquidity and removing liquidity.
I am not intending to remove liquidity from the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool and so I should not calculate the impermanent loss of my investment today, but to do the financial evaluation in this post I will make this calculation.
On September 2, when I added liquidity to the pool, 1 token SWAP.HIVE was worth 0.55$ and 1 token DEC was worth 0.00068$
Today September 26 the market value of the SWAP.HIVE and DEC tokens has changed from the time I added liquidity:
- the HIVE token has lost value
- the DEC token has increased in value.
Because of the change in the value of the tokens in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pair, the amount of tokens I can remove from the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool has also changed.
In the following image you can see the change in the amount of tokens within the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool that I recorded today.
Calculating the impermanent loss is quite easy because there are many online calculators that allow you to perform this calculation in very little time.
I often use the calculator https://upoint.info/calculator/checknow2 which in the case of my investment in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool showed me a result that surprised me because I received the following error message:
The calculator detected a "POSITIVE" impermanent loss which is impossible. The impermanent loss can only be zero or a negative value. There is an error with your input.
Please go back and edit your input.
I rechecked the input and repeated the calculation procedure but got the exact same message as before.
In fact the impermanent loss cannot be a positive result.
As verification I created a spreadsheet in which I calculated the impermanent loss myself and the result I got was indeed a positive impermanent loss!
How is this possible?
I immediately thought of the fees from the DEC-SWAP.HIVE swap transactions because the liquidity providers receive as a reward a portion of the fees generated by the SWAP transactions.
In fact, the part of the fees earned by liquidity providers flow directly into the pool and in the following image you can see the fees I earned (source: https://tribaldex.com/dieselpools/positions).
The impermanent loss should not take into consideration the rewards and for that reason I subtracted the amount of DEC tokens and SWAP.HIVE tokens from the fees and finally I was able to calculate the value of the impermanent loss: -$6.5562
In just over 23 days the change in the value of the tokens of the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pair produced an impermanent loss value of -$6.5562.
But the negative value of the impermanent loss has been far outweighed by the value of the gain I have obtained from SWAP transaction fees which are just one of the rewards provided for liquidity providers in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool.
In fact from the Splinterlands site you can make the Claim of the rewards in DEC tokens from the pool that flow into the game wallet.
I created a simple table with my spreadsheet to keep track of the rewards I have obtained from September 2, 2022 until today, September 26, 2022.
In just over 23 days I have received a total of 35560.62 DEC whose current value is 51.79 SWAP.HIVE = $25.79.
With the data I have collected I can calculate Profit and ROI of my investment in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool.
On September 2, I added liquidity (DECs + SWAP.HIVEs) of the total value of $695 which is the total cost of my investment.
To date, September 26, the total value of the tokens I can remove from the pool + the total value of the DEC token rewards I have received is 713.88$
If I had decided to sell my 500K DEC and my 633.84 SWAP.HIVE on September 2, 2022, I would have obtained a value of 695.20$.
Choosing to invest in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE pool has so far been a better choice because I have obtained a profit of +$18.68 in just over 23 days.
A profit of $18.68 corresponds to a ROI of +2.69%.

Final Considerations
Investing in a liquidity pool is a subjective and personal decision that each Splinterlands player/investor must make based on his or her personal predictions and after doing his or her own research and evaluation.
I am not a financial advisor and the information in this post is not financial advice.
The purpose of this post of mine is to share my personal investment in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE liquidity pool and more importantly to show my readers what calculations need to be done to evaluate an investment in a liquidity pool.
Often those who have a Defi platform use the APR value of a liquidity pool as an incentive to invest.
My advice is to never consider only the value of the APR as a factor in investing.
An APR of 1000% could be worth much less even in the short term if it is linked to a token that has no use case because the value of that token will be linked only to the possibility of selling it and consequently it will gradually lose its value as time goes by because those who own it will always have only one goal: to sell it!
I have decided to invest in the DEC-SWAP.HIVE liquidity pool because both DECs and SWAP.HIVE tokens have many use cases and because the reward of the pool is precisely DEC tokens for which the Splinterlands team has stated as a future goal to obtain a conversion value of 1000 DEC = 1$ and for this reason their value may increase in the future.

Sono un giocatore attivo su diversi giochi basati su blockchain ma Splinterlands, dopo più di tre anni dalla mia iscrizione, è ancora il mio gioco basato su blockchain preferito.
Oltre alla parte ludica collegata alle dinamiche del gioco, Splinterlands offre anche tante possibilità di investimento perchè ha tanti assets (NFTs e tokens) che è possibile acquistare, mettere in stake o vendere.
Una delle possibilità che Splinterlands offre ai propri giocatori/investitori è la possibilità di aggiungere liquidità ad una delle 8 liquidity pools che sono visualizzabili all'interno della sezione Dashboards-->Pools del sito di Splinterlands
Nell'immagine seguente puoi vedere tutte le Splinterlands Pools a cui è possibile aggiungere liquidità.
Io ho scelto di aggiungere liquidità alla pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE che ha al momento un APR stimato del 61.24% e la ricompensa per i liquidity providers è un certo quantitativo di token DEC.

Nel post di oggi voglio fare una valutazione finanziaria del mio investimento nella pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE dopo 23 giorni dal momento in cui ho aggiunto liquidità.
DEC-SWAP.HIVE: Valutazione Finanziaria dopo 23 giorni
Impermanent Loss, Profitto e ROI
Avevo già partecipato alla pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE durante l'airdrop dei token SPS ma il 2 settembre 2022 ho deciso di partecipare nuovamente e ho aggiunto una liquidità maggiore rispetto al passato:
- 500000 token DEC
- 633.84769634 SWAP.HIVE
Il primo fattore di rischio da considerare e valutare quando si investe in una liquidity pool è l'impermanente loss.
Il calcolo dell'impermanent loss fornisce la risposta alla seguente domanda:
Avrei fatto meglio a tenere i token liquidi (Hodling) o avrei fatto meglio a investirli in una pool?
L'impermanent loss è una perdita che si realizza:
- solo nel momento in cui si rimuove liquidità da una pool
- solo se c'è stata una variazione del valore dei tokens immessi come liquidità nella pool nell'inervallo di tempo tra l'immissione di liquidità e la rimozione di liquidità.
Io non ho intenzione di rimuovere liquidità dalla pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE e quindi non dovrei calcolare oggi l'impermanent loss del mio investimento ma per fare la valutazione finanziaria di questo post effettuerò questo calcolo.
Il 2 settembre, quando ho aggiunto liquidità alla pool, 1 token SWAP.HIVE valeva 0.55$ e 1 token DEC valeva 0.00068$
Oggi 26 settembre il valore di mercato dei token SWAP.HIVE e DEC è cambiato rispetto al momento in cui ho aggiunto liquidità:
- il token HIVE ha perso valore
- il token DEC ha aumentato il suo valore
A causa della variazione di valore dei token della coppia DEC-SWAP.HIVE è cambiata anche la quantità di token che posso rimuovere dalla pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE.
Nell'immagine seguente puoi vedere la variazione della quantità dei token all'interno della pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE che ho registrato oggi.
Calcolare l'impermanent loss è abbastanza facile perchè ci sono tanti calcolatori online che permettono di eseguire questo calcolo in pochissimo tempo.
Io uso spesso il calcolatore https://upoint.info/calculator/checknow2 che nel caso del mio investimento nella pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE mi ha mostrato un risultato che mi ha sorpreso perchè ho ricevuto il seguente messaggio di errore:

Ho ricontrollato i dati immessi e ho ripetuto la procedura di calcolo ma ho ricevuto lo stesso identico messaggio di prima.
In effetti l'impermanent loss non può essere un risultato positivo.
Come verifica ho creato un foglio di calcolo in cui ho calcolato da me l'impermanent loss e il risultato che ho ottenuto è stato proprio un impermanent loss positivo!
Come è possibile?
Ho subito pensato alle fees delle operazioni di swap DEC-SWAP.HIVE perchè i liquidity providers ricevono come ricompensa una parte delle fee generate dalle operazioni di SWAP.
Infatti la parte delle fees guadagnate dai liquidity providers confluiscono direttamente nella pool e nell'immagine seguente puoi vedere le fees che ho guadagnato io (fonte: https://tribaldex.com/dieselpools/positions).
L'impermanente loss non dovrebbe tenere conto delle ricompense e per questo motivo ho sottratto il quantitativo di token DEC e di token SWAP.HIVE delle fee e finalmente sono riuscito a calcolare il valore dell'impermanent loss: -6.5562$
In poco più di 23 giorni la variazione del valore dei token della coppia DEC-SWAP.HIVE ha prodotto un impermanent loss del valore di -6.5562$.
Ma il valore negativo dell'impermanent loss è stato ampiamente superato dal valore del guadango che ho ottenuto dalle fees delle operazioni di SWAP che sono solo una delle ricompense previste per i liquidity providers della pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE.
Infatti dal sito di Splinterlands è possibile fare il Claim delle ricompense in token DEC della pool che confluiscono nel wallet di gioco.
Ho creato una semplice tabella con il mio foglio di calcolo per tenere traccia delle ricompense che ho ottenuto dal 2 settembre 2022 fino ad oggi 26 settembre 2022.
In poco più di 23 giorni ho ricevuto un totale di 35560.62 DEC il cui valore attuale è di 51.79 SWAP.HIVE = 25.79$.
Con i dati che ho raccolto posso calcolare Profitto e ROI del mio investimento nella pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE
Il 2 settembre ho immesso una liquidità (DECs + SWAP.HIVEs) del valore totale di 695$ che è il costo totale del mio investimento.
Fino ad oggi 26 settembre il valore totale dei token che posso rimuovere dalla pool + il valore totale delle ricompense in token DEC che ho ricevuto è di 713.88$
Se il 2 settembre 2022 avessi deciso di vendere i miei 500K DEC e i miei 633.84 SWAP.HIVE avrei ottenuto un guadagno di 695.20$.
La scelta di investire nella pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE è stata finora una scelta migliore perchè ho ottenuto un profitto di +18.68$ in poco più di 23 giorni.
Ad un profitto di 18.68$ corrisponde un ROI di +2.69%.

Considerazioni Finali
Investire in una liquidity pool è una decisione soggettiva e personale che ogni giocatore/investitore di Splinterlands deve prendere in base alle proprie previsioni personali e dopo aver fatto le proprie ricerche e valutazioni.
Io non sono un consulente finanziario e le informazioni contenute in questo post non sono consigli finanziari.
Lo scopo di questo mio post è di condividere il mio personale investimento nella liquidity pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE e soprattutto di mostrare ai miei lettori quali sono i calcoli che è necessario fare per valutare un investimento in una liquidity pool.
Spesso chi ha una piattaforma Defi utilizza il valore dell'APR di una liquidity pool per incentivare all'investimento.
Il mio consiglio è di non considerare mai solo il valore dell'APR come elemento per investire.
Un APR del 1000% potrebbe valere molto meno anche nel breve termine se è collegato ad un token che non ha casi d'uso perchè il valore di quel token sarà collegato solo alla possibilità di venderlo e di conseguenza perderà progressivamente il suo valore con il passare del tempo perchè chi lo possiederà avrà sempre e solo un obiettivo: venderlo!
Io ho deciso di investire nella liquidity pool DEC-SWAP.HIVE perchè sia i DEC che i token SWAP.HIVE hanno molti casi d'uso e perchè la ricompensa della pool è costituita proprio dai token DEC per i quali il team di Splinterlands ha dichiarato come obiettivo futuro di ottenere un valore di conversione 1000 DEC = 1$ e per questo motivo il loro valore potrebbe aumentare in futuro.

Helluva breakdown. I went in on the pools too, both SPS and DEC and think the SPS one has returned just a tad better, but profits on both so not complaining.
I chose not to enter the pools with SPSs because I preferred to keep them in staking with a lower apr but with less risk.
Glad to hear that the pool with SPSs is doing better and hope that all Splinterlands pools will give great satisfaction to us liquidity providers ;)

I think the pool is also doing a great job. I also don't think it's too much of a loss because I swapped half of my DEC into SWAP.HIVE and it's already not that far off the peg.

Yes so far it has been a good investment and it's just my personal prediction but I think it will continue to be a good investment.
In any pool there is practically always an impermanent loss the moment you remove liquidity but in the case of the SWAP.HIVE-DEC pool the rewards (fees and DECs) are definitely greater and only in the event that the DECs were to collapse there would be an overall loss but this is a scenario in my opinion very unlikely ;)

With my lack of time it is difficult for me to play a full season with all the daily quests from day one, so I bet on DEC/SPS Pools which gives me a good return to cover rental expenses and rarely goes to my wallet to be kept, I will add a small amount to this Pool of SPS / BNB taking advantage of the fact that I have a stopped amount since the days of Metamask for PVU, nice post.
